Quality of life and clinical correlates in cognitively-able autistic adults: A special focus on sensory characteristics and perceived parental support
CONCLUSION: Findings supported lower QoL in autistic adults. Modifying the QoL correlates may improve life quality in autistic adults. Furthermore, our findings revealed the importance of sensory symptoms and paternal support in QoL of autistic adults, which was a novel finding in this population.PMID:38570236 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.022 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Exploring the challenges of taiwanese nurses in the COVID-19 post-pandemic era
This study, conducted from May to November 2023, employed a qualitative inquiry using focus groups to delve into these challenges. Six focus group sessions, involving 33 nurse participants recruited through snowball sampling from various hospital settings were conducted to explore their clinical experiences during and after the pandemic. Thematic analysis revealed two primary themes: the 'Invisibility of Nurses' within the healthcare system and the 'Moral Duty of Nursing Practice'. These findings illuminate a tension between the overlooked role of nurses and their ethical obligations, underscoring a critical need for polic...

The factors impacting on Gleason score upgrading in prostate cancer with initial low Gleason scores
CONCLUSIONS: Smaller PV and elevated PSAD are associated with increased risk of GS upgrading, whereas lead-time bias is not. A cut-off value of PV < 38 ml and PSAD > 0.26 ng/ml2 were further identified to be associated with pathological GS upgrading.PMID:38555188 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.014 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Exacerbated gastrointestinal symptoms and long COVID in IBD patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection: A multi-center study from taiwan
CONCLUSIONS: Our study revealed that EGS and long COVID occurred in one third of IBD patients with non-severe COVID-19, even though most of them had received the standard plus booster vaccination. We identified associated factors for EGS and long COVID, emphasizing the importance of post-COVID-19 follow-up in IBD patients.PMID:38553294 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.016 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on the collection and use of blood and blood components in Taiwan
This study aims to evaluate changes in blood collection and transfusions during the period following the nationwide Level 3 alert (May-July 2021).METHODS: We retrieved usage data for red blood cells (RBC) from the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) database 2019-2021.RESULTS: During the Level 3 alert period, approximately 85% of COVID-19 cases (11,455/13,624) were in Taipei. In Taipei, blood collection declined by 26.34% and RBC transfusions decreased by 17.14% compared to pre-pandemic levels. RBC usage decreased across all service types, with a significant decrease observed in hematology/oncology by 15.62% (-483 patie...
