Association between Cesarean section delivery and increased risk of childhood Kawasaki disease
CONCLUSION: In conclusion, this study identified a potential association between Cesarean section delivery and a higher risk of Kawasaki disease during six-to eighteen months of the prospective birth cohort in Taiwan.PMID:38097429 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.12.006 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Disease severity and antiviral response in patients with chronic hepatitis B with non-obese NAFLD
CONCLUSIONS: Approximately one third of CHB + NAFLD patients were non-obese. Non-obese patients, while less metabolically abnormal, had a similar risk for fibrosis progression as obese patients. Obesity status did not impact the efficiency of antiviral therapy.PMID:38097430 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.12.001 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

The predictors of long-term outcomes after targeted therapy for primary Aldosteronism
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Dec 14:S0929-6646(23)00471-0. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.11.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTUnilateral primary aldosteronism is thought to be a surgically curable disease, and unilateral adrenalectomy is the mainstay treatment. The Primary Aldosteronism Surgical Outcome (PASO) consensus was developed to assess clinical and biochemical outcomes to standardize the classification of surgical outcomes. However, fewer than half of patients are cured of hypertension after adrenalectomy; therefore, preoperative patient counseling and evaluation might be necessary. Moreover, current studies show that gene...

Epidemiology and clinical characteristics of hospitalized adults with respiratory syncytial virus infection at a medical center in northern Taiwan
J Formos Med Assoc. 2023 Dec 14:S0929-6646(23)00484-9. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2023.12.004. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe study aimed to describe respiratory syncytial virus infections among hospitalized adults between January 2021 and February 2023 from a single medical center in Taiwan. Clinical information from infected patients with RSV was via medical charts review. The incidence of RSV during the study period among adult inpatients showed seasonal variation and could be up to around 2 % in peak season. Among 19 patients identified, the major comorbidity was chronic heart disease (10/19; 52.6 %) followed by chronic pu...

Effectiveness of two same-manufacturer intravenous immunoglobulin for Kawasaki disease
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with brand T, brand P prolonged the fever and hospitalization durations after IVIG treatment and increased the proportion of IVIG treatment unresponsiveness, but it did not infer the coronary arteries sequelae.PMID:38097428 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.11.014 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Non-inferiority of progestin-primed ovarian stimulation versus GnRH antagonist protocol: A propensity score-weighted analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The PPOS protocol with dydrogesterone provided similar embryo outcomes to the GnRH-ant protocol, with notable distinctions in clinical pregnancy and implantation rate. The serum LH concentration during ovarian stimulation using PPOS was well-controlled.PMID:38092654 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.12.008 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Effect of tibolone versus hormone replacement therapy on lower urinary tract symptoms and sexual function
CONCLUSIONS: Despite the limited effect, tibolone seems to have more benefit in nocturia than HRT. In addition, tibolone seems to have benefits on overall low urinary tract storage symptoms; and both tibolone and HRT seem to have beneficial effects on female sexual function, despite there were no significant differences between tibolone and HRT.PMID:38092655 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.12.007 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

A national survey on health-related quality of life for people with dementia in residential long-term care institutions
CONCLUSION: ADL, dementia severity, cognitive function, and depressive symptoms influenced the HRQoL of people with dementia in residential LTC institutions. Longitudinal studies should be conducted to better understand how HRQoL changes over time among people with disabilities.PMID:38072742 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2023.11.012 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)
