Patisiran, an RNAi therapeutic for hereditary transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis: Sub-analysis in Taiwanese patients from the APOLLO study
CONCLUSIONS: This analysis suggests that patisiran is well tolerated and may provide a substantial clinical benefit for Taiwanese patients with hATTR amyloidosis with polyneuropathy.TRIAL REGISTRATION INFORMATION: The studies were registered on the ClinicalTrials.gov. The APOLLO study ClinicalTrials.gov identifier is NCT01960348 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT01960348), with the registration date of October 10, 2013, and the first patient was enrolled on December 13, 2013. For the global OLE, the ClinicalTrials.gov identifier is NCT02510261 (https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT02510261) with the registration da...

Impacts of COVID-19 pandemic on the collection and use of blood and blood components in Taiwan
This study aims to evaluate changes in blood collection and transfusions during the period following the nationwide Level 3 alert (May-July 2021).METHODS: We retrieved usage data for red blood cells (RBC) from the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) database 2019-2021.RESULTS: During the Level 3 alert period, approximately 85% of COVID-19 cases (11,455/13,624) were in Taipei. In Taipei, blood collection declined by 26.34% and RBC transfusions decreased by 17.14% compared to pre-pandemic levels. RBC usage decreased across all service types, with a significant decrease observed in hematology/oncology by 15.62% (-483 patie...

Modified screening and management strategies for chronic rhinosinusitis in hematologic patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
CONCLUSIONS: Sinonasal evaluation should be targeted to the high-risk group. ESS is effective in managing CRS, while control of CRS is not determinant of overall survival in patients receiving HSCT.PMID:38531697 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.013 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

End-stage renal disease should not Be considered a contraindication for veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation
CONCLUSIONS: ESRD was not an independent predictor of in-hospital mortality after VA-ECMO. The survival of ESRD patients was not inferior to those without ESRD when receiving ECPR. Therefore, ESRD should not be considered a contraindication to VA-ECMO in adults.PMID:38527921 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.012 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Sequential multimodal treatments with chemotherapy and surgery for advanced soft tissue sarcoma may be associated with better survival than chemotherapy
CONCLUSION: Surgery may be more beneficial for the patients who receive chemotherapy. Our results support evaluation of sequential multimodal treatments strategy including surgery and chemotherapy in patients with advanced STS.PMID:38521760 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.03.007 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)
