Effectiveness of abdominal sandbag training in enhancing diaphragm muscle function and exercise tolerance in patients with chronic respiratory failure
CONCLUSIONS: Abdominal sandbag training may be beneficial for patients dependent on a ventilator. The training improves the function of the diaphragm muscle, thereby increasing tidal volume and reducing the respiratory rate and rapid shallow breathing index, thus facilitating withdrawal from ventilation. This training approach may also improve the thickness and motion of the diaphragm and the rate of ventilator detachment.PMID:38302365 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.021 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Primary breast diffuse large B-cell lymphoma characterized by CNS relapse and successful hematopoietic stem cell transplantation salvage therapy
CONCLUSION: Patients with low-risk mIPI scores, CR after first-line treatment, and those who underwent HSCT after the first relapse had significantly better survival. Intrathecal chemotherapy conferred no benefit in preventing CNS relapse. Further research is needed to assess frontline HSCT's effectiveness in improving outcomes and preventing CNS relapses in PB-DLBCL patients.PMID:38296697 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.020 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Application of blood-based biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease in clinical practice: Recommendations from Taiwan Dementia Society
J Formos Med Assoc. 2024 Jan 30:S0929-6646(24)00051-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.018. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBlood-based biomarkers (BBM) are potentially powerful tools that assist in the biological diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in vivo with minimal invasiveness, relatively low cost, and good accessibility. This review summarizes current evidence for using BBMs in AD, focusing on amyloid, tau, and biomarkers for neurodegeneration. Blood-based phosphorylated tau and the Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio showed consistent concordance with brain pathology measured by CSF or PET in the research setting. In addition, glial fib...

Comparison of the physical, thermal, and biological effects on implant bone site when using either zirconia or stainless-steel drill for implant bone site preparation
CONCLUSION: The thermal effect study is more favorable for using the zirconia drill than the stainless-steel drill for bone preparation. Cytological analysis indicate that the zirconia drill produces a similar impact on bone cells activity as the stainless-steel drill. Therefore, we conclude that the zirconia drills offer a good cutting effect similar to currently available stainless-steel drills in various aspects.PMID:38246800 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.011 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Risk of hepatocellular carcinoma after viral clearance achieved by DAA treatment
J Formos Med Assoc. 2024 Jan 19:S0929-6646(24)00048-2. doi: 10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.015. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe advent of direct-acting antiviral (DAA) therapy has revolutionized hepatitis C virus (HCV) treatment, enabling most HCV-infected patients to achieve a sustained viral response (SVR) easily and safely in a short period. On the other hand, it is gradually being recognized that a significant proportion of patients are still at risk of developing de novo and recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), even after HCV elimination, and therefore, elucidation of the risk of de novo and recurrent HCC, investigatio...

Impact of left atrial appendage orifice diameter on the safety and efficacy of left atrial appendage closure using the LAmbre device
CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the LAmbre device is a safe and feasible option for occluding the LAA, regardless of its orifice diameter. However, it is important to note that a larger LAA orifice diameter may increase the risk of PDL and delayed PE.PMID:38238125 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.012 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)

Comparative analysis of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis on the risk of new onset diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: Our study provides evidence that PD treatment may increase the risk of NODM in ESRD patients, particularly among those with preexisting prediabetes. These findings highlight the importance of personalized treatment approaches, and nephrologists should consider prediabetes when choosing the dialysis modality for their patients.PMID:38220559 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfma.2024.01.013 (Source: J Formos Med Assoc)
