In the last 3 decades, a growing evidence base has supported a paradigm shift towards clinical practice which is underpinned by a broad biopsychosocial assessment and subsequent management of patients. Despite improving our understanding of the multifactorial nature of pain and suffering, as well as playing to many of our profession ’s strengths such as having the gift of time to spend listening to, understanding and validating patients’ narratives, as well as a “holistic” approach forming the foundation of our teaching, this shift has created a terrain which is not always easy to navigate. Osteopathic ableism: A critical disability view of traditional osteopathic theory in modern practice
Osteopathy is a health profession regulated by statute in the UK and osteopaths regularly encounter patients from a wide range of backgrounds including people with disabilities. Disabled people are underrepresented in UK osteopathy, both as patients and practitioners. We explore some of the traditional discourses of osteopathic practice and discuss the potential harms of applying these concepts to practice. Our approach is informed by a critical disability studies lens and a view that the traditional theories of health and function within osteopathy are inherently ableist and exclusionary.
