If, like me, you want to learn more about fascia then this book would be a very good place to start. It is intended as a “primer for professionals such as movement educators, physical therapists, osteopaths, massage therapists, fitness professionals and physicians”. Primer is an excellent choice of word in this case as the book provides the reader with helpful basic background information about fascia and then add s layers which are better able to ‘stick’ as chapters lead on from one to another in a narrative way. It depends on how things are to you
Professor Stephen Tyreman ’s recent editorial in the International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine [1] was, like many of his papers [2–11], a spur for us as practitioners to reflect on the way we think and work with patients. However, this contribution was special. Tyreman drew on his own experience of serious illness to reflect on the role of narrative and ended the editorial by offering a description of the clinician’s task:“The practitioner's task is not merely to explain and treat, but to provide support and insight into the meaning of illness experiences in order to enable a patient to develop a better, li fe-...

Effects of manual therapy on the diaphragm in asthmatic patients: A randomized pilot study
Stretching of respiratory muscles is included in what is known as manual therapy techniques. A diaphragm stretching technique has shown beneficial effects on respiratory function and thoracic and spinal mobility in healthy subjects. Is digital image correlation able to detect any mechanical effect of cranial osteopathic manipulation? – A preliminary study
Today there is still a controversy surrounding the existence of mobility between the bones of the skull, the foundation on which cranial osteopathy techniques are based. The lack of total closure for the sutures of young people or simply the suture discontinuity of the elderly would mean there is residual mobility or at least a weakness area. Investigating practitioners' perceptions of the role of spirituality in osteopathic practice using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis
There is a growing interest in a spiritual aspect to health and healthcare in many areas of medicine, but there has been little research that explores the potential spiritual aspect within osteopathic practice. (Source: International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine)

Design and development of an e-learning programme: An illustrative commentary
E-learning is defined as the use of computer or other electronic devices and internet technologies to provide educational interventions aiming at enabling learning and improving performance [7,25]. E-learning is an effective teaching method in health professions: two systematic reviews with meta-analysis demonstrated that e-learning is associated with large positive effects compared with no intervention and e-learning's effectiveness is similar to traditional instructional methods [2]. E-learning is used in a range of learning contexts such as higher education [13,14] and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) [22,25]. ...

Identification of prognostic factors and assessment methods on the evaluation of non-specific low back pain in a biopsychosocial environment: A scoping review
85% of all LBP presentations can be classified as from non-specific causes (NSLBP) [1] where joints, discs and connective tissues may be contributing to symptoms but no specific tissues can be identified as causing the symptoms [2]. However, prior models of back pain were more biomedically orientated leading patient management to be informed by a biomedical approach that is still being used by many manual therapists [3]. In recognition of the lack of structural causes and acknowledging the predictive role of psychosocial factors, current guidance suggests the use of a biopsychosocial (BPS) model for LBP [4]. This book is primarily aimed at student and qualified manual therapists, including osteopaths, with and without experience of working with persons presenting with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs). The authors have written for those with some prior knowledge of neuro-musculoskeletal anatomy, physiology and pathology, particularly of the head, neck and the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). As a qualified osteopath, with some experience of working with persons with TMD, I found this book highly informative and easy to ‘dip into’ to retrieve information.
