Reflective practice enhances osteopathic clinical reasoning
There has been extensive research of clinical reasoning in health professions, and reflective practice is widely used. However, in the field of osteopathy, clinical reasoning is largely under-researched and the use of structured reflective practice at its early stages. Stress axis and osteopathy: A dual hormone approach
Manual therapy initiates a cascade of neurophysiological changes in various systems including the peripheral nervous system, autonomic nervous system and the endocrine system. Of particular focus of this review was the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. When faced with a stressor, the HPA axis provides the frontline of defence resulting in the production of cortisol, measurement of which has been shown to be a reliable indicator of HPA axis activity. Manual therapy has been shown to influence the HPA axis. (Source: International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine)

The 2nd edition of “Fascial Dysfunction: Manual Therapy Approaches” is the last publication in Leon Chaitow's remarkably productive career, during which he inspired many a student and colleague far beyond the realms of his own osteopathic profession. Updating a 2014 edition and maintaining an open-minded multi-mod al approach, Chaitow sadly passed away in September 2018. (Source: International Journal of Osteopathic Medicine)

Patient experience, satisfaction, perception and expectation of osteopathic manipulative treatment: A systematic review
Patient experience, satisfaction, perception and expectation are some related measures valued by patient-centered health care. Patient experience (PE) usually refers to objective, observable events or facts; while patient satisfaction, perception and expectation (PS) are measures which focus on a patient's subjective evaluation of the health care process. These concepts have been studied in osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), a therapeutic intervention practiced by osteopathic practitioners in many countries and by some medical doctors in USA and Canada. Refining the biopsychosocial model for musculoskeletal practice by introducing religion and spirituality dimensions into the clinical scenario
Addressing religion and spirituality (R/S) dimensions may be uncomfortable for patients and practitioners because they refer to intimate beliefs about existence, vary across the globe and cultures, and are not routinely shared in the modern therapeutic scenario. Often, R/S dimensions are overlooked in musculoskeletal (MSK) practice despite associations with attitudes and behaviour that directly affect quality of life and health outcomes. Inclusion of basic R/S dimensions in the therapeutic alliance may optimise care and establish these dimensions as interactors within the biopsychosocial model. (Source: International Journ...
