In the last 3 decades, a growing evidence base has supported a paradigm shift towards clinical practice which is underpinned by a broad biopsychosocial assessment and subsequent management of patients. Despite improving our understanding of the multifactorial nature of pain and suffering, as well as playing to many of our profession ’s strengths such as having the gift of time to spend listening to, understanding and validating patients’ narratives, as well as a “holistic” approach forming the foundation of our teaching, this shift has created a terrain which is not always easy to navigate.
