Successful treatment with brentuximab vedotine for a patient with very late relapse of limited stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma
AbstractA 26-year-old man with limited-stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) achieved complete response after standard treatment with combined modality treatment of involved-field radiation and four cycles of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine chemotherapy. Fourteen years later, enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes were revealed by computed tomography, and based on identical histological findings, he was diagnosed with cHL, considered to be a recurrence of the initial disease. HL is a rare subtype of malignant lymphoma in Japan, and there are limited data on well-documented cases in Japanese, especially very l...

A case of cardiac metastases from head and neck cancer presenting as hyperdense armored heart
In this report, we describe a case of cardiac metastasis from head and neck cancer. Although asymptomatic at the time of detection, positron emission tomography –computed tomography was effective in ascertaining the diagnosis. However, patients with cardiac metastases usually have a poor prognosis, and unfortunately, the patient died shortly after detection. At autopsy, the patient had a “hyperdense armored heart” owing to a huge pericardial metastase s. Here, we report the imaging and autopsy findings of a hyperdense armored heart owing to cardiac metastases from head and neck cancer. (Source: International Cancer Conference Journal)

Successful management of Wilms tumor accompanied by traumatic renal injury: a case report
AbstractWhen a tumor and trauma coexist, the treatment strategy must be established while considering their interaction. We herein report a 5-month-old girl with Wilms tumor complicated by blunt renal trauma. She was involved in a traffic accident and had hemorrhagic shock due to renal bleeding. We performed hemostasis by transcatheter arterial embolization. Ten days later, we extirpated the potential malignant tumor and left kidney. We were able to complete the surgery without rupture or major bleeding. Postoperative histopathology confirmed Wilms tumor. In the year since she received postoperative chemotherapy, there has...

Chemoradiotherapy for fistula-related perianal squamous cell carcinoma with Crohn ’s disease
We report a case of chemoradiotherapy for locally advanced fistula-related perianal squamous cell carcinoma in a patient with long-standing Crohn’s disease which was controlled b y a maintenance therapy. The patient completed standard chemoradiotherapy using intensity-modulated radiotherapy without severe toxicity, and achieved complete remission. Standard chemoradiotherapy using intensity-modulated radiotherapy may be feasible and effective treatment for this population whe n Crohn’s disease is controlled. Systemic chemotherapy combined with anti-epidermal growth factor receptor antibody therapy for RAS wild-type appendiceal signet-ring cell carcinoma: a series of three cases
AbstractThe effect of anti-epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) antibody-containing chemotherapy on appendiceal signet-ring cell carcinoma (SRCC) remains unknown. Herein, we report three patients, diagnosed as having synchronous metastases, who underwent this treatment for unresectable appendiceal SRCC withRAS wild type. Cases 1, 2, and 3 received FOLFOX with panitumumab, FOLFOX with cetuximab, and FOLFIRI with cetuximab, respectively, and their progression-free survival were 6.2, 7.2, and 18.7  months, respectively. The subsequent anti-vascular endothelial growth factor antibody-containing therapy was ineffective, and...

Potential effectiveness of combining bevacizumab with paclitaxel for treating HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer
AbstractAlthough various first- to third-line HER2-targeted therapies have been established, the optimal sequence after third-line therapy has not been determined yet. Here, we describe seven patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer who underwent bevacizumab (BV) and paclitaxel (PTX) combination therapy after several HER2-targeted therapies. Re-biopsy of metastatic sites was performed on four patients during the treatment prior to BV  + PTX; three patients presented the same HER2-positive status as that of the primary tumor and two of whom achieved partial response. Four of seven patients achieved partial r...

A safe and simple procedure for laparoscopic hepatectomy with combined diaphragmatic resection
We report a case of successful laparoscopic hepatectomy with diaphragmatic resection. A 48-year-old man who underwent laparoscopic partial hepatectomy for liver metastasis of rectal cancer 20  months ago underwent surgery because of a new hepatic lesion that invaded the diaphragm. The patient was placed in the left hemilateral decubitus position. The liver and diaphragm attachment areas were encircled using hanging tape. Liver resection preceded diaphragmatic resection with the hanging tape in place. Two snake retractors were used to secure the surgical field for the inflow of CO2 into the pleural space after diaphragmati...

Successful treatment of cervical and upper thoracic esophageal adenocarcinoma using induction chemotherapy followed by surgery: a case report
We report a patient with locally advanced cervical to upper esophageal adenocarcinoma who was able to undergo induction chemotherapy and radical surgery. A 55-year-old man was diagnosed with a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma between the cervical and upper thoracic esophagus. The primary lesion had infiltrated into the tracheal membrane and had metastasized into the cervical lymph nodes. The initial diagnosis was T4bN1M1 stage IVB. The lower edge of the tumor was close to the tracheal bifurcation, making it difficult to create a longitudinal tracheal foramen during surgery. Therefore, when biweekly-DCF therapy was perf...

Conversion surgery of Stage IV gastric cancer with peritoneal dissemination after nivolumab
AbstractA 69-year-old man was clinically diagnosed as stage IV gastric cancer with peritoneal dissemination. We performed systemic chemotherapy consisting of S-1 plus oxaliplatin as a first line, and ramucirumab plus nab-paclitaxel as a second line. However, CT and EGD revealed growth of the primary tumor and the lymph nodes along the lesser curvature and adjacent to the cardia. In addition, CT revealed ascites in the rectovesical pouch. Therefore, treatment was switched to nivolumab. After 3 treatment courses, CT revealed shrinkage of lymph nodes and disappearance of ascites. After 12 courses of nivolumab, however, EGD re...

Endometrial stromal sarcoma of the sigmoid colon: a case report and literature review
We report a rare case of endometrial stromal sarcoma that developed in the sigmoid colon along the gonadal vasculature, which was difficult to distinguish from colon cancer. A large polyp was found in the sigmoid colon of a 74-year-old woman during a routine medical examination and was diagnosed as tubular adenoma. On colonoscopy 7 months later, the tumor had grown and blocked the lumen, causing stenosis. She was referred to o ur hospital for surgery. Although detailed examination at our hospital did not yield a definitive diagnosis, bowel obstruction was considered likely and we performed laparoscopic low anterior resecti...
