Drug-induced thrombocytopenia associated with trastuzumab in a patient with HER2-positive recurrent gastric cancer
AbstractHere, we report a 57-year-old female patient with HER2-positive recurrent gastric cancer who experienced drug-induced thrombocytopenia associated with trastuzumab, a humanized anti-HER2 monoclonal antibody. Shortly after the initiation of S-1, oxaliplatin, and trastuzumab chemotherapy, the patient experienced severe thrombocytopenia and did not respond to platelet transfusions. Based on the findings of increased numbers of polynuclear megakaryocytes in the bone marrow and an elevated level of platelet-associated IgG (PA-IgG), the patient was diagnosed with drug-induced thrombocytopenia (DITP). The platelet count re...

Carotid body tumor with neck metastasis due to germline SDHB variant: a case report and literature review
AbstractCarotid body tumor involving the succinate dehydrogenase subunit B (SDHB) variant reportedly had a higher frequency of metastasis than other variants of succinate dehydrogenase. However, the correlation between genotype and phenotype among patients with carotid body tumor withSDHB gene variant remains unclear. Thus, we present a case of carotid body tumor with neck lymph metastasis caused by a novelSDHB variant, which resulted in long-term disease-free survival achieved after surgery. A 43-year-old man presented to our hospital with a 2-year history of a painless neck mass. Based on the radiographic findings, the p...

Appendiceal goblet cell adenocarcinoma with peritoneal recurrence 9  years after surgery
We report a case of goblet cell adenocarcinoma that developed late peritoneal recurrence, and we review pertinent literature. A 63-year-old male underwent appendectomy for acute appendicitis. Histopathological findings of appendectomy specimen showed mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma, and positive resection margin. He also underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection and apical lymph node dissection. After 9  years, he presented with ileus and abdominal CT examination indicated possible peritoneal dissemination. Laparoscopic observation revealed disseminated nodules throughout the entire abdominal cavity, and the patient ...

Successful laparoscopic conversion surgery for gastric cancer with para-aortic lymph node metastasis after third-line chemotherapy: a case report
AbstractWe herein reported a case of advanced gastric cancer (GC) with para-aortic lymph node (PALN) metastases who successful achieved downstaging following systemic chemotherapy and underwent curative laparoscopic conversion surgery. A 74-year-old male patient diagnosed with advanced GC and PALN metastases [cT4N3M1(LYM), stage IVA] was administered chemotherapy and immunotherapy for 28  months. After 27 courses of nivolumab as third-line chemotherapy, PALN enlargement was resolved, for which conversion surgery was planned. Subsequently, laparoscopic distal D2 gastrectomy with sampling para-aortic lymphadenectomy was per...

Laparoscopic hysterectomy for endometrial cancer after the Fontan procedure: The first case report
AbstractThe Fontan procedure is a palliative cardiac surgery performed for children with a single functional ventricle, and its aim is to divert central venous return to the pulmonary artery without passing through the right ventricle. We herein report the first case of endometrial cancer after the Fontan procedure that was successfully treated with laparoscopic hysterectomy. A 38-year-old female who underwent the Fontan procedure at the age of 23 presented with abnormal genital bleeding and was diagnosed with endometrial cancer. Computed tomography revealed distinctive venous vasculature in the pelvis: most of the venous ...

Germline variant of BRCA1 c.5332G & gt;A has clinical features of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome
AbstractThe proband was a 39-year-old Japanese woman with stage I triple negative breast cancer. GermlineBRCA1 andBRCA2 genetic testing revealed the presence of aBRCA1 c.5332G>A (p.Asp1778Asn) variant classified as a VUS in the heterozygous state. She underwent curative surgery and adjuvant chemotherapy for her TNBC, but no intensive follow-up or risk-reducing surgery was performed in contrast to normal practice in a patient with hereditary breast and ovarian cancer syndrome. At postoperative 2 years 6 months, elevation of CA15-3 led to the diagnosis of Stage III high-grade serous ovarian cancer. Studies and information...

Giant cell tumor of bone: a report of two cases with metaphyseal lesions and their progression to the articular surface
AbstractTwo patients presented to outside providers with joint pain. Both had isolated lytic metaphyseal lesions on plain radiographs that were not noted or acted upon. Subsequent radiographs showed large expansile lytic lesions involving the metaphysis and epiphysis extending to the subchondral bone. Both patients were found to have pathology-confirmed giant cell tumors requiring curettage and cementation. Although commonly involving the epiphysis and subchondral bone, giant cell tumors of long bone can present as isolated metaphyseal lesions. Careful examination of radiographs and early detection may make these lesions e...

Successful treatment with brentuximab vedotine for a patient with very late relapse of limited stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma
AbstractA 26-year-old man with limited-stage classic Hodgkin lymphoma (cHL) achieved complete response after standard treatment with combined modality treatment of involved-field radiation and four cycles of doxorubicin, bleomycin, vinblastine, and dacarbazine chemotherapy. Fourteen years later, enlarged mediastinal lymph nodes were revealed by computed tomography, and based on identical histological findings, he was diagnosed with cHL, considered to be a recurrence of the initial disease. HL is a rare subtype of malignant lymphoma in Japan, and there are limited data on well-documented cases in Japanese, especially very l...

A case of cardiac metastases from head and neck cancer presenting as hyperdense armored heart
In this report, we describe a case of cardiac metastasis from head and neck cancer. Although asymptomatic at the time of detection, positron emission tomography –computed tomography was effective in ascertaining the diagnosis. However, patients with cardiac metastases usually have a poor prognosis, and unfortunately, the patient died shortly after detection. At autopsy, the patient had a “hyperdense armored heart” owing to a huge pericardial metastase s. Here, we report the imaging and autopsy findings of a hyperdense armored heart owing to cardiac metastases from head and neck cancer. (Source: International Cancer Conference Journal)

Successful management of Wilms tumor accompanied by traumatic renal injury: a case report
AbstractWhen a tumor and trauma coexist, the treatment strategy must be established while considering their interaction. We herein report a 5-month-old girl with Wilms tumor complicated by blunt renal trauma. She was involved in a traffic accident and had hemorrhagic shock due to renal bleeding. We performed hemostasis by transcatheter arterial embolization. Ten days later, we extirpated the potential malignant tumor and left kidney. We were able to complete the surgery without rupture or major bleeding. Postoperative histopathology confirmed Wilms tumor. In the year since she received postoperative chemotherapy, there has...
