The uterusmasculinus of the Eurasian beaver (Castor fever L.) - the appraisal of fast hormone regulation by membrane androgen and estrogen receptors involvement
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2023 Oct 3:114389. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114389. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe phenomenon of remaining paramesonephric ducts (uterus masculinus) in males of some animal species concerning its role is still an unresolved issue. Now it is well-recognized that sex hormonal regulation of reproductive physiology involves also fast nongenomic control of cellular processes through noncanonical signaling. Herein, in the uterus masculinus of Eurasian beaver membrane androgen receptor (metal ion transporter Zrt- and Irt-like protein 9; ZIP9) and membrane estrogen receptor (G protein-coupled estrogen rece...

Molecular mechanisms of the stress-induced regulation of the inflammatory response in fish
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2023 Oct 1:114387. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114387. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTStressors in the environment of aquatic organisms can profoundly affect their immune system. The stress response in fish involves the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-interrenal (HPI) axis, leading to the release of several stress hormones, among them glucocorticoids, such as cortisol, which bind and activate corticosteroid receptors, namely the glucocorticoid receptor (GR) and mineralocorticoid receptor (MR). These receptors are highly expressed on immune cells, thereby allowing stress to have a potent effect th...

Validation of enzyme immunoassays for quantifying sex steroid hormones in tropical screech owls (Megascops choliba)
The objective of this study was to perform analytically and biologically validation of enzyme immunoassay (EIA) kits for measuring testosterone (T), estradiol (E2), faecal androgen metabolites (fAM), and faecal estrogenic metabolites (fEM) in the tropical screech owl (Megascops choliba). Serum and fecal samples were collected from six adult females and six males both before and during breeding season, with males' gonadal activity assessed using electroejaculation (EE). The parallelism test confirmed the immunogenic similarity of the antigens in the estradiol and testosterone standards and the antigens in the serum samples ...

Reproductive Endocrinology, Morphological Traits, and Sexual Selection in a Population of Wild South African Giraffes
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2023 Sep 21:114383. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114383. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSex steroids are pervasive in mammals and evolutionarily conserved, but differences in the nuances of endocrine profiles characterize distinct species. Two sex steroids, testosterone and progesterone, feature prominently in the life history of mammalian taxa, but neither one has been analyzed from wild giraffes. Our study was designed to address this gap in knowledge by examining how these sex steroids are related to biological features and giraffe life history. We conducted the research at Rooipoort Nature Reserve a 44...

Does ghrelin regulate intestinal motility in rabbits? An in vitro study using isolated duodenal strips
In conclusion, ghrelin does not affect muscle contractility or motilin-induced contraction in the rabbit duodenum, which is due to the lack of ghrelin receptors. The present in vitro results suggest that ghrelin might not be a regulator of intestinal motility in rabbits.PMID:37722460 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114384 (Source: General and Comparative Endocrinology)

Endocrine disruptors in Adansonia digitata (Linn) extract induce alteration of female Wistar rats' oestrous cycle, hormone and lipid profiles
CONCLUSION: AAMF fraction of A. digitata (L) root bark disrupts the endocrine activity in female Wistar rats. The oleic acid component of the AAMF fraction may be responsible for modulating the activities of reproductive hormones. The authors recommend further studies to ascertain the significance of Adansonia digitata extract's oleic acid in regulating the female reproductive cycle.PMID:37722461 | DOI:10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114385 (Source: General and Comparative Endocrinology)
