Estrogen-related receptor functions via the 20-hydroxyecdysone and IIS/TOR signaling pathways to regulate the development and morphology changes of ant Polyrhachis vicina Roger (Hymenoptera, Formicidae)
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2023 Aug 30;344:114373. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114373. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEstrogen-related receptor (ERR) is a key regulator of insect growth, development, and metabolic processes in insects; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying its effects are not fully understood. We investigated roles of 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E) and insulin/insulin-like signaling/target of rapamycin (IIS/TOR) signaling pathways in the effects of PvERR on larval development, metamorphosis, and adult growth in ant Polyrhachis vicina Roger. PvFOXO expression levels depended on caste and developmental stage. PvERR ...

Differential regulation of hepatic SH3 domain binding kinase 1 (SBK1) expression in mouse and goldfish
We report here that Sbk1 expression in mouse hepatocytes was downregulated by glucocorticoid, whereas saturated and unsaturated fatty acids were stimulators of Sbk1 expression. The regulatory role of glucocorticoid and fatty acid was further confirmed by the Sbk1 promoter assay, which aligned with the presence of several glucocorticoid-response elements (GRE) and peroxisome proliferator responsive elements (PPRE) in the mouse Sbk1 promoter. The inhibitory effect of glucocorticoids on hepatic Sbk1 expression and protein content could also be demonstrated in vivo after prednisolone injection. Moreover, the expression of SBK1...

Oral cortisol and dexamethasone intake: differential physiology and transcriptional responses in the marine juvenile Sparus aurata
This study approached the long-term oral administration of cortisol (F) and dexamethasone (DEX), two synthetic glucocorticoids, compared to a control group (CT) in the juveniles of a marine teleost, the gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata). Physiologically, DEX treatment impaired growth, which appears to be linked to carbohydrate allocation in muscle and liver, hepatic triglycerides depletion, and reduced hematocrit. Hypophyseal gh mRNA expression was 2-fold higher in DEX than in CT or F groups. Similarly, hypothalamic trh and hypophyseal pomcb followed this pattern. Plasma cortisol levels were significantly lower in DEX than...

Omega-3 with and without insulin replacement alleviates detrimental effects of type II diabetes on reproductive system of male C57BL/6 mice
Gen Comp Endocrinol. 2023 Aug 21:114370. doi: 10.1016/j.ygcen.2023.114370. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAIMS: this study aimed to examine the protective role of omega-3 and insulin on reproductive system of the male mouse model of type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM), especially DNA integrity and chromatin quality.MAIN METHODS: adult age-matched mice were divided into intact, sham, or T2DM groups (n=7) which received a high-fat diet/ low-dose streptozotocin. T2DM-induced animals underwent no treatment as diabetic control (T2DM), received omega-3 (T2DM+Omg3), received insulin (T2DM+Ins) and their combination (T2DM+Omg3+Ins) fo...

Gonadotropic activity of a second relaxin-type peptide in starfish
In this study, a second relaxin-like peptide (RLP2) was identified in starfish species belonging to the orders Valvatida, Paxillosida, and Forcipulatida. Like RGP, RLP2 precursors comprise a signal peptide and a C-peptide in addition to the A- and B-chains. However, a unique cysteine motif [CC-(3X)-C-(10X)-C] is present in the A-chain of RLP2, which contrasts with the cysteine motif in other members of the relaxin/insulin superfamily [CC-(3X)-C-(8X)-C]. Importantly, in vitro pharmacological tests revealed that Patiria pectinifera RLP2 (Ppe-RLP2) and Asterias rubens RLP2 (Aru-RLP2) trigger shedding of mature eggs from ovari...
