Genetic liability to bipolar disorder and onset of postpartum mental disorders
Introduction Childbirth triggers a broad range of diagnoses jointly defined as postpartum mental disorders (PMDs),1 but immediate onset within the first 30 days after delivery has been linked to an increased probability of converting to bipolar disorder (BD) diagnoses later.2 Building on these specific observations, we hypothesised that PMDs occurring within the first month after delivery have a higher bipolar genetic liability, measured as polygenic score (PGS), compared with those diagnosed 31–365 days post partum, and further speculated this association is specific to the PGS for BD compared with genetic liability...

Qualitative evidence regarding the experience of receiving and providing care for mental health conditions in non-specialist settings in low-income and middle-income countries: a systematic review of reviews
Conclusions This review provides nuanced and contextualised insights regarding the experiences of receiving and providing care for mental health conditions in LMICs, including barriers influencing service provision and uptake. It is important to ensure mental healthcare in non-specialist settings in LMICs is delivered in a manner which is feasible, acceptable and culturally appropriate in order to improve access to care, reducing stigma and promoting better overall health and well-being for individuals and communities. Development and validation of a dementia risk score in the UK Biobank and Whitehall II cohorts
Background Current dementia risk scores have had limited success in consistently identifying at-risk individuals across different ages and geographical locations. Objective We aimed to develop and validate a novel dementia risk score for a midlife UK population, using two cohorts: the UK Biobank, and UK Whitehall II study. Methods We divided the UK Biobank cohort into a training (n=176 611, 80%) and test sample (n=44 151, 20%) and used the Whitehall II cohort (n=2934) for external validation. We used the Cox LASSO regression to select the strongest predictors of incident dementia from 28 candidate predictors and then dev...

Effects of a culturally adapted counselling service for low-income ethnic minorities experiencing mental distress: a pragmatic randomised clinical trial
Conclusions CAC clinically outperformed WL for mild and above-mild levels of mental distress in EMs. Clinical implications Making CAC routinely available for EMs in community settings can reduce healthcare burden. Trial registration number NCT04811170. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Depression, violence and socioeconomic outcomes among refugees in East Africa: evidence from a multicountry representative survey
Conclusion Our results highlight that refugees in East-Africa—particularly those exposed to violence and extended exile periods—are disproportionately affected by depression, which may also hinder their socioeconomic integration. Clinical implications Given the high prevalence of depression among refugees in East Africa, our results underline the need for scalable interventions that can promote refugees’ well-being. Evaluation of telepsychiatry during the COVID-19 pandemic across service users, carers and clinicians: an international mixed-methods study
Conclusion and relevance There were circumstances in which telepsychiatry was seen as more suitable than others and clear differences in clinician, carer and service user perspectives on telepsychiatry. Clinical implications All stakeholders should be actively engaged in determining a hybrid model of care according to clinical features and service user and carer preferences. Clinicians should be engaged in training programmes on telepsychiatry. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Living alone and mental health: parallel analyses in UK longitudinal population surveys and electronic health records prior to and during the COVID-19 pandemic
Conclusions People living alone have poorer mental health and lower life satisfaction. During the pandemic, this gap in self-reported distress remained; however, there was a narrowing of the gap in service use. Clinical implications Greater mental health need and potentially greater barriers to mental healthcare access for those who live alone need to be considered in healthcare planning. Correspondence on population health surveys and screening tools for depressive disorders: aims and uses by Arias de la Torre et al
Arias de la Torre et al argue in ‘Population health surveys and screening tools for depressive disorders: aims and uses’ that population-based studies like the European Health Interview Survey (EHIS) are primarily intended to identify and compare vulnerable groups and factors associated with depression on a population level, not to estimate prevalence of major depressive disorders (MDD).1 We fully agree that the use of brief depression questionnaires in such studies provides meaningful data on the perceived burden by depressive symptoms. While questionnaire sum scores can be easily analysed, reported and compar...

Associations between air pollution and mental health service use in dementia: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusions Residential air pollution exposure is associated with increased CMHT usage among people with dementia. Clinical implications Efforts to reduce pollutant exposures in urban settings might reduce the use of mental health services in people with dementia, freeing up resources in already considerably stretched psychiatric services. Predictors of positive patient-reported outcomes from 'Early Intervention in Psychosis: a national cross-sectional study
Conclusions Specific components of EIP care were associated with improved patient reported outcomes. Psychosocial interventions and carer support may be particularly important in optimising outcomes for patients. Clinical implications These findings emphasise the need for small case load sizes and comprehensive packages of treatment in EIP services. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Self-Help Plus for refugees and asylum seekers: an individual participant data meta-analysis
Conclusions Although SH+ did not differ significantly from ECAU in reducing symptoms of depression at postintervention, it did present benefits for particularly vulnerable participants (ie, unemployed and with lower mental well-being levels), and benefits were also evident at midterm follow-up. These results are promising for the use of SH+ in the management of depressive symptoms and improvement of well-being and self-identified problems among refugees and asylum seekers. Prescription amphetamines in people with opioid use disorder and co-occurring psychostimulant use disorder initiating buprenorphine: an analysis of treatment retention and overdose risk
Conclusions PA use was associated with improved buprenorphine retention in people with OUD with and without co-occurring PSUD. The risks of acute SUD-related events and drug-related poisonings associated with PA use did not differ when comparing PA-using days with days without PA use. Clinical implications Patients with OUD on buprenorphine should receive treatment with a PA when indicated. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Improving mental healthcare access and experience for people from minority ethnic groups: an England-wide multisite experience-based codesign (EBCD) study
Conclusions Stakeholder-led implementation plans highlight that substantial change is needed to increase equity in mental healthcare in England. Clinical implications Working with people with lived experience in leadership roles, and collaborations between NHS and community organisations will be essential. Future research avenues include comparison of the benefits of culturally specific versus generic therapeutic interventions. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Cause-specific excess mortality after first diagnosis of bipolar disorder: population-based cohort study
Conclusion External causes of death contributed more to the mortality gap than somatic causes after controlling for age-specific background general population mortality. Clinical implication A balanced consideration between therapeutic response, different treatment options and risk of cause-specific mortality is needed to prevent premature mortality in BD and to reduce the mortality gap. Patients requesting and receiving euthanasia for psychiatric disorders in the Netherlands
Conclusion The average demographic and psychiatric profile of patients requesting and receiving EAS were found to be broadly similar. The majority of patients requesting EAS had received a comorbid diagnosis, making this a difficult-to-treat patient group. Only a small number of patients requesting had their requests granted. Patients from different diagnostic groups showed patterns in why their requests were not granted. Clinical implications Many of the patients who withdrew their requests for EAS benefited from being able to discuss dying with end of life experts at EE. Health professionals can make a difference to a v...
