Prevalence estimates of major depressive disorder in 27 European countries from the European Health Interview Survey: accounting for imperfect diagnostic accuracy of the PHQ-8
Conclusions Prevalence estimation needs to account for imperfect diagnostic accuracy. Clinical implications Major depression prevalence in European countries is likely lower than previously reported on the basis of the EHIS survey. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Exploring the efficacy of psychotherapies for depression: a multiverse meta-analysis
Conclusions and Clinical Implications The multiverse meta-analysis revealed the overall robustness of the effectiveness of psychotherapies for depression. Notably, meta-analyses that included studies with a high risk of bias, compared the intervention with wait-list control groups, and not correcting for publication bias produced larger effect sizes. Decoding fMRI alcohol cue reactivity and its association with drinking behaviour
Conclusions These findings provide insight into how AUD individuals differently decode alcohol cues compared with healthy participants, from the componential processes of visual object recognition and reward appraisal. Clinical implications The identified patterns are suggested as biomarkers and potential therapeutic targets in AUD. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

What I stand for as BMJ Mental Health editor
Welcome to BMJ Mental Health. In January 2023, Evidence-Based Mental Health (EBMH) has changed its name to BMJ Mental Health, after 25 years of activity (the journal was founded in 1998) and after recently becoming one of the top 10 psychiatric journals in terms of impact factor. BMJ Mental Health is now online only and entirely open access. Changing name is not just a rebranding exercise. It is a fantastic opportunity to do things better and reach a wider audience of mental health clinicians and researchers. In the last year, EBMH published a variety of original articles, spanning from global health,1 self-harm2 and suici...

Symptom-specific effects of counselling for depression compared to cognitive-behavioural therapy
Conclusions CfD and CBT for depression have differential effects on symptoms demonstrating specific mechanisms of change. Clinical implications CBT was uniquely associated with changes in symptoms associated with anxiety and may be better suited to those with anxiety symptoms comorbid to their depression. When assessing change, the baseline should be the first therapy session, not the pretreatment assessment. Residual change scores should be preferred over difference score methods. metaumbrella: the first comprehensive suite to perform data analysis in umbrella reviews with stratification of the evidence
Conclusion To facilitate the use of this package, even for researchers unfamiliar with R, we also provide a JAMOVI module and an open-access, browser-based graphical interface that allow use of the core functions of the package with a few mouse clicks. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Peer-provided psychological intervention for Syrian refugees: results of a randomised controlled trial on the effectiveness of Problem Management Plus
Conclusions PM+ effectively reduces symptoms of CMDs among Syrian refugees. A strength was high retention at follow-up. Generalisability is limited by predominantly including refugees with a resident permit. Clinical implications Peer-provided psychological interventions should be considered for scale-up in HICs. Examining the Lancet Commission risk factors for dementia using Mendelian randomisation
Conclusions and implications Post hoc analysis indicated that the apparent protective effects of smoking, obesity and blood pressure were a result of survivor bias. The findings from this study did not support those presented by the Lancet Commission. Evidence from causal inference studies should be considered alongside evidence from epidemiological studies and incorporated into reviews of the literature. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Associations between antipsychotics and risk of violent crimes and suicidal behaviour in personality disorder
Conclusions Treatment with antipsychotics was associated with reduced risks for violent crime suspicions and suicidal behaviour among individuals with personality disorder. Clinical implications Potential effects of antipsychotics on suicidal behaviour and violence should be taken into account when considering treatment options for people with personality disorders. Can we mitigate the psychological impacts of social isolation using behavioural activation? Long-term results of the UK BASIL urgent public health COVID-19 pilot randomised controlled trial and living systematic review
Discussion We delivered a pilot trial of a behavioural intervention targeting loneliness and depression; achieving long-term follow-up. Living meta-analysis provides strong evidence of short-term benefit for loneliness and depression for cognitive and/or behavioural approaches. A fully powered BASIL trial is underway. Clinical implications Scalable behavioural and cognitive approaches should be considered as population-level strategies for depression and loneliness on the basis of a living systematic review. Important adverse events to be evaluated in antidepressant trials and meta-analyses in depression: a large international preference study including patients and healthcare professionals
Conclusions These most important NSAEs should be systematically reported in antidepressant trials. Clinical implications The most important NSAEs should contribute to the core outcome set for harms in depression. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)

Guided digital health intervention for depression in Lebanon: randomised trial
Conclusions Guided digital mental health interventions can be effective in the treatment of depression in communities exposed to adversities in LMICs, although some uncertainty remains because of high attrition. Clinical implications Guided digital mental health interventions should be considered for implementation in LMICs. Trial registration number ClinicalTrials.gov NCT03720769. Comparison of prediction methods for treatment continuation of antipsychotics in children and adolescents with schizophrenia
Conclusions All prediction models showed similar performance in predicting the treatment continuation of antipsychotics. Application of prediction models might be helpful for evidence-based decision-making in antipsychotic treatment. (Source: Evidence-Based Mental Health)
