Sexual activity at 1 year after total hip arthroplasty in Indian patients
ConclusionAlthough THA significantly reduced difficulty in sexual activity, most patients reported no change in the frequency of sexual activity or sexual satisfaction, had moderate to severe stress regarding sex, and were primarily concerned about safety of coital position and fear of dislocation at the end of 1-year postoperatively. Pre- and postoperative counselling by their surgeons will provide the patient with relevant information and help reduce anxiety and stress, improve satisfaction, and enhance the  overall sexual health of the patient undergoing primary THA. Patient satisfaction and patient-reported outcomes do not vary by BMI class in total hip arthroplasty
ConclusionPatients of higher BMI class reported greater improvements following THA. While risk/benefit shared decision-making remains a personalized requirement of THA, this study highlights that utilization of BMI cutoff may not be warranted based on pain and functional improvement. Lactic acid levels are associated with morbidity, length of stay, and total treatment costs in urban trauma patients with lower extremity long bone fractures
ConclusionHigh initial lactate levels are independently associated with post-operative morbidity as well as higher direct hospitalization costs and longer lengths of stay in orthopedic trauma patients who underwent fixation for fractures of the lower extremity long bones. Ballistic trauma patients had significantly higher lactate levels compared to the blunt cohort, and lactate was not independently associated with increased rates of post-operative morbidity in the ballistic cohort alone.Level of evidenceIII. What are the common factors that lead to the failure to achieve minimal clinically important difference after shoulder surgery? A scoping review
ConclusionIn summary, numerous factors exert a negative influence on the attainment of MCID following shoulder procedures, and these factors appear to be irrespective of the specific surgical technique employed. Patients presenting with these factors may perceive their surgical outcomes as less successful when compared to those without these factors. Identifying these factors can enable healthcare providers to provide more effective counseling to patients regarding their expected outcomes and rehabilitation course. Furthermore, these findings can aid in the development of a screening tool to better identify these risk fact...

The impact of asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-positive disease status on inpatient complications following total joint arthroplasty: a propensity score-matched analysis
ConclusionDespite lengthier hospital stays among AHIV patients, baseline AHIV was not associated with adverse outcomes following TKA and THA. This adds to the literature and warrants further research into the impact of asymptomatic, well-controlled HIV infection on postoperative outcomes following total joint arthroplasty. The significance of heterotopic ossification following total ankle arthroplasty: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionThis systematic review and meta-analysis found that HO is a common finding following TAR that is not associated with inferior clinical outcomes. Surgical intervention was required only for moderate-to-severe, symptomatic HO following TAR. This study is limited by the marked heterogeneity and low level and quality of evidence of the included studies. Further higher quality studies are warranted to determine the precise prevalence and impact of HO on outcomes following TAR.Level of evidence III. Functional outcomes and rates of return to sport activities in a non-athlete population after the open Brostrom –Gould repair: a seven-year follow-up
ConclusionRecreational athlete patients who underwent the BGT demonstrated excellent functional outcomes after a mean follow-up of 7  years. Residual pain and symptoms of instability after surgery were the main complaints associated with limitations in physical activities. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Periprosthetic fracture following arthroplasty for femoral neck fracture: is a cemented stem protective?
ConclusionsIn patients with a FNF treated with arthroplasty, cementing the femoral component is associated with a lower risk of intraoperative and post-operative PFF. Choice of procedure may be based on patient factors and surgeon preference. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Revolutionizing bone tumor management: cutting-edge breakthroughs in limb-saving treatments
AbstractLimb salvage surgery has revolutionized the approach to bone tumors in orthopedic oncology, steering away from historical amputations toward preserving limb function and enhancing patient quality of life. This transformative shift underscores the delicate balance between tumor eradication and optimal postoperative function. Primary and metastatic bone tumors present challenges in early detection, differentiation between benign and malignant tumors, preservation of function, and the risk of local recurrence. Conventional methods, including surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, have evolve...

Comparison of patient demographics and patient-specific risk factors for readmissions following open reduction and internal fixation for acetabular fractures
ConclusionThis study illustrated how several patient-specific risk factors may contribute to increased 90-day readmission risk following acetabular ORIF. A heightened awareness of these comorbidities in patients requiring acetabular ORIF is required to improve patient outcomes and minimize rates of readmission. Further investigation is needed to improve patient outcomes, and increase awareness of potential post-operative complications in these higher-risk patient populations. Functional outcome and analysis of factors affecting health-related quality of life of surgically managed pelvic ring fractures: a cross-sectional study
This study evaluates the functional outcomes and health-related Quality of life (HRQOL) of patients who underwent internal fixation for unstable pelvic fractures. Various factors influencing the outcomes are also investigated.Material and MethodsA single-center cross-sectional study was conducted on patients with unstable sacral fractures treated with posterior tension band plate or sacroiliac plating with or without symphyseal plating between 2016 and 2020. Patient demographics, injury mechanisms, associated injuries, surgical details, complications, and return-to-work data were collected. HRQOL was assessed using specifi...

Are there gender-specific differences in hip and knee cartilage composition and degeneration? A systematic literature review
AbstractThe aim of the present review is to systematically analyse the current literature about gender differences in hip or knee cartilage composition and degeneration, to help explaining how and why osteoarthritis affects women more often and more severely than men. A systematic review of the literature in English was performed. Eleven studies on 1962 patients (905 females and 787 males) that reported differences on cartilage composition between males and females were included. Nine evaluated the knee, one the hip, and one both. They were heterogeneous in their methods: one conducted histological analyses, and all the ot...

Does the pararectus approach have better outcomes and fewer complications than the modified Stoppa approach for the fixation of acetabular fractures in adults: A systematic review and meta-analysis?
ConclusionThe pararectus approach offers an advantage with lesser operative blood loss and shorter hospital stay, whilst MSA stands out with better reduction quality and radiological outcomes. Nevertheless, both approaches exhibit no difference in complication rates, duration of surgery, incision length, and functional outcome. Hence, the pararectus approach can be considered an alternative to MSA; however, the existing literature fails to demonstrate a distinct advantage over MSA.
