Benchmarking institutional geriatric hip fracture management: a prelude to a care quality improvement initiative
ConclusionThis study emphasizes the importance of early admission and fast provision of surgical fixation to reduce mortality and morbidity. Benchmarking institutional practices allows for defining the evidence-practice gaps and barriers to best practice implementation. This is an essential step to begin care quality improvement for geriatric patients with proximal femur fragility fractures. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Comparing pediatric femoral shaft fracture repair patient outcomes between pediatric and non-pediatric orthopedic surgeons
ConclusionThe results indicated that patients undergoing surgical treatment for a femoral shaft fracture by a non-pediatric trained orthopedic surgeon were at increased risk of a prolonged hospital stay compared to those being treated by POS. Additionally, POS were more likely to operate on more difficult patients with increased comorbidities. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Ten-year outcomes of anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with hamstring tendon autograft and femoral fixation with a cortico-cancellous screw suspension device
ConclusionsThe study demonstrates that ACL reconstruction with HT autograft and cortico-cancellous screw suspension device determines satisfying clinical results after 10 years of follow-up. From our cohort, a low rate of graft failure has been reported, even though almost 50% of patients present a knee OA greater or equal to grade II KL. Long-term outcome of total hip arthroplasty in patients with multiple hereditary exostosis
ConclusionsTHA in the setting of MHE reliably improves patient function. One in three patients will have a postoperative complication; however, the long-term incidence of revision is low. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Functional, radiological, and quality of life outcome of unstable acetabular fracture with quadrilateral plate involvement at a tertiary care center in Jakarta, Indonesia
ConclusionsPatients with unstable acetabular fracture with quadrilateral plate involvement subject had significantly lower functional, radiological, and quality of life outcomes compared to those without quadrilateral plate involvement. Both quadrilateral hook and infrapectineal plates demonstrated non-significant functional and radiological outcomes difference. Posterior column plate also resulted in the same functional, radiological, and quality of life outcome compared with suprapectineal fixation. Investigating sagittal spinopelvic alignment and equivalent stress on the femoral head in patients with rapidly destructive coxarthrosis
ConclusionPatients with RDC tend to have sagittally imbalanced spine. Decreased acetabular coverage of the femoral head may heighten mechanical load of the hip joint in patients with RDC. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Comparing the mechanical characteristics between leg lengthening using only an Ilizarov external fixator and leg lengthening over a nail using an external fixator manufactured in Vietnam
ConclusionNo statistically significant differences were observed in the mechanical fixation characteristics of axial compression and bending between the Ilizarov samples and LON samples. However, the axial torsional stiffness of the Ilizarov samples was statistically greater than that of the LON samples. We recommend using the simplest configuration for domestic frames in combination with LON for limb lengthening. Partial weight-bearing is permitted in the distraction stage.Level of evidenceCase –control study. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Bone-anchored prostheses for lower limb amputation in a French cohort with 1 –15 years of follow-up: implant survival rates, mechanical complications, and reported outcomes
ConclusionThis is the first French cohort of bone-anchored prostheses and among the series with the longest follow-up periods. The findings indicate that bone-anchored prostheses are safe and reliable for amputee patients who have difficulties with classic prostheses. The effect of smoking on 30-day complications following primary repair of Achilles tendon ruptures
ConclusionDespite the rate of complications being relatively low in the short-term perioperative period, individuals who smoke should be counseled on the surgical risks they may experience following Achilles tendon repair, including wound dehiscence and urinary tract infections. Discussion preoperatively between the physician and patient who smoke can include ways in which postoperative care will be done to minimize the risk of adverse events, ultimately reducing costs for both the patient and the hospital. The association between lower limb fractures and weight gain in adults: a prospective analysis of body mass index trends
ConclusionsLower limb fractures significantly affect weight gain over an 18-month period, with substantial psychological and physical consequences. Healthcare providers should anticipate potential weight gain post-fracture and incorporate strategies addressing both physical and mental aspects of rehabilitation to enhance recovery outcomes. Early and even immediate weight bearing may play a pivotal role in mitigating weight changes and returning the patient to their previous level of activity. Further detailed studies focusing on different fractures and postoperative interventions are recommended. (Source: European Journal ...

Combination of tibial tubercle transfer, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, trochleoplasty and lateral release for patellofemoral instability provides good middle- to long-term outcomes in adolescents
ConclusionA combination procedure of tibial tubercle transfer, medial patellofemoral ligament reconstruction, trochleoplasty and lateral release leads to good middle- to long-term subjective, functional and radiographic outcomes for patients with recurrent patellofemoral instability and underlying predisposing factors of increased TT-TG distance of more than 20  mm, Dejour B or D trochlear dysplasia and medial patellofemoral ligament rupture.Level of evidenceIV.
