All-suture fixation of syndesmotic injuries: a case series
ConclusionsIn conclusion, this case series presents the first clinical outcomes of an all-suture fixation technique for treatment of unstable syndesmotic ankle injuries. Our results suggest that the all-suture fixation technique results in similar patient reported outcomes when compared with historically reported patient reported outcomes of suspensory suture button fixation, and low rates of complication or hardware failure.Level of Evidence 4. Making the cut: a technical note and literature review of Bernese periacetabular osteotomy techniques with special attention to ischial osteotomy initiation and completion with an inside to anterior curved osteotomy
AbstractPeriacetabular osteotomy includes a fluoroscopy-guided ischial cut without direct visualization. Previously described techniques include a mediolateral ischial cortex cut, which is associated with the risk of injuring nearby nerves. Another drawback of that technique is the difficulty connecting an ischial cortex cut with a retroacetabular cut due to orthogonal nature of the osteotomy. In general, an additional cut from medial to lateral is required. The present study aimed to describe a technique that eliminates those problems due to use of only a central cut of the ischium and the curved nature of the osteotomy. ...

A technique for introducing broad-spectrum topical antibiotics during open reduction and internal fixation of acetabular fractures
AbstractPostoperative surgical site infections remain a significant and prevalent complication after open reduction and internal fixation of acetabular fractures. Local antibiotics have been shown to decrease risk of postoperative infection, although recent evidence is conflicting. We provide a consistent and replicable technique for delivering intraoperative broad-spectrum antibiotics in the form of a putty applied directly to surgical implants. With this technique, systemic levels of those antibiotics remain safe and stable. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

The learning curve to ROSA: cases needed to match the surgery time between a robotic-assisted and a manual primary total knee arthroplasty
ConclusionOur study demonstrated that about 70 cases are necessary for a senior surgeon to balance operative time between mTKAs  and raTKAs using the ROSA system. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Does the distal nail position impact the rates of misalignment and bone union in distal tibial fractures?
ConclusionIn intramedullary nailing of distal tibial fractures, distal positioning of the nail slightly lateral to the center of the talus in the coronal plane and slightly posterior in the sagittal plane (zone 2 –2) allows high alignment percentages to be obtained. Positioning medial to this point in the coronal plane (zone 3) is associated with more significant misalignment and should be avoided. The association of pre-existing mental health conditions and patient outcomes after lower extremity orthopaedic trauma: a scoping review
The objective of this s tudy was to systematically review literature addressing the association between pre-existing mental health conditions and patient outcomes following surgical interventions for lower extremity fractures in non-geriatric populations.MethodsA systematic literature review was conducted using Medline, Embase, and Scopus databases following PRISMA-ScR guidelines to select studies that examined lower extremity orthopaedic trauma  outcomes in relation to pre-existing mental health conditions. Studies that evaluated patients with surgically treated lower extremity fractures and a history of mental health co...

The risk of DDH between breech and cephalic-delivered neonates using Graf ultrasonography
ConclusionIt appears that there is an actual difference in the incidence of DDH between breech-delivered and cephalic-delivered neonates, although the difference may be less significant than previously considered. The majority of the breech-delivered neonates that were initially considered as pathological (Phase 1) are, in fact, healthy. This is ascertained in subsequent ultrasound examinations conducted in later phases (Phases 2 –4), when the incidence of pathological cases decreases. This could be attributed to potential different maturation pattern between these groups. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

Functional and radiographic assessments of post-traumatic asymmetrical ankle osteoarthritis treatment using supramalleolar osteotomies
ConclusionSMOT is very effective in the treatment of post-traumatic ankle osteoarthritis and postpones ankle fusion or total ankle replacements. This surgery significantly improves functional and radiological outcomes as well as the range of motion in the ankle. Meticulous preoperative planning by radiological measurements of different angles around the ankle is considered the crucial factor in success of that operation. Dynamic hip screw in proximal femoral fractures followed by “single-stage” hip arthroplasty—retrospective analysis
AbstractThe aim of this study is to present the results of single-stage total hip arthroplasty (THA) after Dynamic Hip Screw (DHS) failure, or secondary posttraumatic osteoarthrosis. From 2003 to 2020, 15 THAs were performed in group of 15 patients for the treatment of DHS failure, or for late complications following femoral neck and pertrochanteric fractures. The mean follow-up period after arthroplasty was 46.9  months (range 7–139). The patients were evaluated retrospectively—both clinically and radiographically, focussing on the demography, infection rate and other complications (revision surgery), during the year...

Risk factors for pubic ramus fracture nonunion after conservative treatment of pelvic ring injuries: a retrospective cohort multicenter study
ConclusionConservative treatment is ineffective in some ramus fracture cases with pelvic ring injury. As ramus nonunion causes functional deterioration, active treatment is required if the displacement is  ≥ 16 mm. (Source: European Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology)

No changes in bone mineral density following total knee arthroplasty using an all-polyethylene tibial component
ConclusionResults from BMD analysis suggest that implants were well fixated without compromising function. We believe that using APTs with computer navigation is a viable cheaper option to MBTs for patients who are less active, have lower BMI and good bone quality. Mini-augmented glenoid baseplate and mini-humeral tray reverse total shoulder arthroplasty implant comparisons: two-year clinical outcomes
ConclusionThe group that received the mini-augmented glenoid baseplate and mini-humeral tray combination had better overall active shoulder flexion, external rotation at 90 ° abduction, and internal rotation. This group also had better perceived shoulder function compared to the group that received a mini-augmented glenoid baseplate with a standard humeral tray.
