Learning to provide humanistic care and support in the context of chronic illness: Insights from the narratives of healthcare professionals in hemato-oncology
CONCLUSION: Our findings bring to light an overlooked facet of patient support in the context of cancer care, which is the acquisition of the soft skills required to deliver humanistic care and support. This learning process requires time and involves navigating between the realms of sympathy and empathy. Experiential learning is intertwined with the complexity of the often long-term patient-professional relationship that characterizes hemato-oncology. This unique relationship offers rewards for healthcare professionals on both personal and professional fronts.PMID:38382155 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102522 (Source: Europea...

Experiences, difficulties and coping methods of female nurses caring for breast cancer surgery patients: A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: Overall, even though participating nurses need to deal with the burden of physical and emotional challenges when caring for patients, their coping strategies with these difficulties often remain insufficient. Thus, our humble recommendation may lie in satisfying the organizational and psychosocial needs of surgical nurses to promote their coping skills when fulfilling their demanding tasks with mastectomy patients.PMID:38354587 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102511 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Impact of pediatric cancer on parents' relationships
DISCUSSION: Parents of children with cancer did not show an increased separation rate. The partnership quality at the time of diagnosis was significantly lower, but was still above the cut-off of 34, suggesting predominant resilience of parental partnerships. However, some of parents showed significantly lower satisfaction. Future studies should identify parents who are more likely to experience a deterioration in partnership satisfaction or separation so that partnership interventions can be offered where appropriate.PMID:38340643 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102514 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)
