Speech intelligibility and its relation to auditory temporal processing in Czech and Swiss German subjects with and without tinnitus
ConclusionThe results support the notion of language-specific differences in speech comprehension which persists also in tinnitus subjects, and indicates different associations with the elementary measures of auditory temporal processing. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Two different methods to digitally visualize continuous electrocochleography potentials during cochlear implantation: a first description of feasibility
ConclusionThe study demonstrates effective implementation of advanced ECochG software combined with real-time visualization, enabling residual hearing preservation during CI. Visualization had no apparent effect on surgeon performance or workload. Future investigation involving a larger population will assess the long-term impact of ECochG on hearing threshold and structure preservation. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Ultrasonographic findings of facial muscles in patients with severe facial palsy who showed no improvement for more than 3  months on acute stage
This study confirmed that the zygomaticus major, zygomaticus minor, and levator labii suprioris muscles, which raise the corner of the mouth, are the first to degenerate in patients with severe facial paralysis. This study demonstrated that ultrasonography is a simple and non-invasive examination for facial paralysis. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

The prognostic effect of radiological extranodal extension in HPV-positive oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinomas: a retrospective cohort analysis
ConclusionsAlthough rENE could not be identified as an independent negative prognosticator for outcome in our HPV  + OPSCC population, outcomes tend to deteriorate with increasing rENE. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Computer-aided designed 3D-printed polymeric scaffolds for personalized reconstruction of maxillary and mandibular defects: a proof-of-concept study
ConclusionsOur reconstructive algorithm was feasible and reproducible in a preclinical setting. Functional and aesthetic outcomes were satisfactory independently of the complexity of the defect. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Evaluation of subarcuate canal on CT images in the perspective of clinical basis
ConclusionsThe morphometric measurements obtained in this study can provide useful information for neurosurgeons, neurotologist and otolaryngologists involved in retrosigmoid approach for internal acoustic meatus tumor surgery and cerebellopontine angle surgery, and for patients undergoing cochlear implant planning with a retrofacial approach. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone associated with nasal and paranasal malignant tumors
ConclusionThe incidence of SIADH associated with nasal and paranasal malignant tumors is relatively more common in olfactory neuroblastoma and neuroendocrine carcinoma. The hyponatremia caused by SIADH may be corrected by fluid restriction or tolvaptan, and the SIADH may be recovered through anti-tumor therapy. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

A predictive survival model for patients with stage IV oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma treated with chemoradiation
ConclusionsThe pretreatment Hb, pretreatment SII, posttreatment SII, and posttreatment SIRI are associated with survival in patients with stage IV oropharyngeal cancers. The developed nomogram aids in survival prediction and treatment adjustment. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Endoscopic trans-sphenoidal pituitary surgery does not impact postoperative nasal quality of life
ConclusionsOur concept of minimally invasive endoscopic tumor resections on the pituitary gland with preservation of nasal turbinates shows low morbidity for the patient. Despite objectifiable surgery-associated changes in the nose, nasal physiology in terms of smell, airflow and mucociliary clearance can be preserved and the subjective quality of life of our patients remains stable. Comparing linear and non-linear models to estimate the appropriate cochlear implant electrode array length —are current methods precise enough?
ConclusionsThe CC varies depending on the underlying CDL approximation, which critically influences electrode array choice. Based on the literature, we hypothesize that the non-linear method systematically overestimates the CC and may lead to rather too short electrode array choices. Future studies need to assess the accuracy of the individual mathematical models. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)
