Epidemiology of postoperative bleeding after endoscopic nasal and sinus surgery and factors associated with bleeding
ConclusionsPostoperative bleeding requiring intervention occurs in 4.8% of cases, and PNN is associated with a high risk of postoperative bleeding. Wound infection is a potential cause of postoperative bleeding, and antimicrobial administration should be considered in addition to local treatment. Impact of COVID-19 pandemic: increase in complicated upper respiratory tract infections requiring ENT surgery?
ConclusionsRelaxation of COVID-19-related restrictions was associated with an increase of upper respiratory tract infection-related otologic infections requiring surgical intervention with an increasing rate of beta-hemolytic group A streptococcal infections. These findings highlight the importance of considering the impact of the pandemic on upper respiratory tract infection complications and adapting management strategies accordingly. Cochlear implantation compliance among minorities at high risk for hearing impairment following universal newborn hearing screening
ConclusionUNHS allows for early HI detection among minority populations at higher risk for CI, yet compliance rates remain lower compared with control. Familiarity of families with the importance of early detection and HI risk may result in higher compliance rates for cochlear implantation. Health providers should aim to improve education and communication with this unique group of patients and consider health promotion programs. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Comparison of treatment modalities for non-tuberculous mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis in children
ConclusionsThis study shows a faster resolution of nontuberculous mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis in children when treated surgically, more specifically when treated with partial or complete lymph node excision. Antibiotic treatment also leads to faster resolution than conservative management. There was a low rate of complications, and no permanent facial nerve damage was reported. Incidence and characteristics of otitis media with effusion in adults before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic
ConclusionThe incidence of adult OME in China showed a tendency to decrease, recover, and decrease again following the COVID-19 outbreak. Pandemic prevention and control measures have had a certain impact on reducing the incidence, but the elderly are more prone to this disease. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Cimetidine for recurrent respiratory papillomatosis in pregnancy as an alternative adjuvant treatment
ConclusionCimetidine is generally safe and not known to be associated with any major teratogenic risks during pregnancy. RRP is postulated to worsen in pregnant women due to the increase in oestrogen levels during pregnancy. Hence, adjuvant therapy was imperative for our patient to reduce recurrent papillomata formation during her pregnancy. Larger scale studies are warranted to assess the use of long-term high-dose cimetidine in terms of efficacy and safety in pregnancy. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Mechanism underlying and prevention of electrode migration in cochlear implants
ConclusionElectrode migration can result in a decrease in hearing ability and may necessitate a revision surgery to adjust the electrode placement. The main factors affecting electrode placement include the position of electrode within the mastoid cavity and the elasticity of straight electrodes. It is important for surgeons to recognize the factors that increase the risk of electrode migration and to take preventative measures to reduce this risk. A novel coupling quality  index to estimate the coupling efficiency in Vibrant Soundbridge
ConclusionThis study provides evidence for the utility of intraoperative ABR measurements in predicting the coupling efficiency in patients with VSB. Our results showed that the coupling quality index had an acceptable accuracy in discriminating between  good and poor coupling, which can help clinicians optimize the fitting process for individuals and may ultimately lead to improved patient outcomes. A pyroptosis-related gene expression signature predicts immune microenvironment and prognosis in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
ConclusionThe expression signature that encompasses pyroptosis-related genes could be used as molecular classification for HNSCC and pyroptosis might be a promising therapeutic target in HNSCC. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

Blood –labyrinth barrier breakdown in Meniere’s disease
ConclusionThe permeability of blood –labyrinth barrier is increased in Meniere's disease, in combination with the typical criteria of Meniere's disease it may be a good biological marker. Destruction of blood–labyrinth barrier may be one of the causes of endolymphatic hydrops in Meniere's disease. (Source: European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology)

The effect of subperichondrial dissection on nasal vascularity in septorhinoplasty operations
ConclusionBoth subperichondrial and supraperichondrial dissection techniques are physiological and result in fewer complications with minimal permanent vascular damage. We believe incision plays a critical role but keeping the perichondrium intact is important for short-term angiogenesis, where long-term results showed no difference in vascularization.
