Pharmacotherapies in Older Adults with COPD: Challenges and Opportunities
AbstractOlder adults have a higher prevalence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which will likely increase substantially in the coming decades owing to aging populations and increased long-term exposure to risk factors for this disease. COPD in older adults is characterized by low-grade chronic systemic inflammation, known as inflamm-aging. It contributes substantially to age-associated pulmonary changes that are clinically expressed by reduced lung function, poor health status, and limitations in activities of daily living. In addition, inflamm-aging has been associated with the onset of many comorbidities ...

Polypharmacy and Aging in People Living with HIV: 6 Years of Experience in a Multidisciplinary Outpatient Clinic
ConclusionsThe high prevalence of polypharmacy in PLWH, especially among older adults, place these patients at high risk for clinically relevant drug –drug interactions (DDIs). A multidisciplinary approach involving physicians and clinical pharmacologists could help to optimize medication regimens associated with reduced risk. (Source: Drugs and Aging)

Benzodiazepine Receptor Agonists Use and Cessation Among Multimorbid Older Adults with Polypharmacy: Secondary Analysis from the OPERAM Trial
ConclusionBZRA prevalence was high among included multimorbid older adults, and BZRA cessation occurred in almost a quarter of them within 6  months after hospitalization. Targeted BZRA deprescribing programs could further enhance cessation. Specific attention is needed for females, central nervous system-acting co-medication, and COPD co-morbidity.RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT02986425. December 8, 2016.
