Web-Based Training and Telephone Follow-up of Patients With Heart Failure: Randomized Controlled Trial
This study was carried out to determine the effect of Web-based training and telephone follow-up on symptom burden and health status in patients with heart failure. Patient training and postdischarge follow-up are necessary to improve symptom management and quality of life in patients with heart failure. In Turkey, Web-based education and phone monitoring are not very common yet. In this parallel randomized controlled trial, patients were allocated to a control group (n = 32) or an intervention group (n = 32). The control group received routine care, and the intervention group was administered the following interventions i...

Older Adults' Perception on and Use of Patient Portals: A Comparative Analysis of Two Samples
This study analyzed the difference in perceived usability, self-efficacy, and use of patient portals between older adults recruited from a healthcare system (n = 174) and older adults recruited from nationwide communities (n = 126). A secondary data analysis was conducted using the data sets of two independent studies. A series of linear and ordinal logistic regression analyses were performed. The healthcare system sample had more health issues, higher levels of perceived usability and self-efficacy, and frequent use of patient portals compared with the community sample. This study indicates that efforts to improve usabili...

Electronic Health Record Transition: The Patient Experience
Use of the EHR at the bedside is now commonplace, and some fear this may compromise their relationship with the patient. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of a transition of an EHR on the patient experience. Three non-equivalent groups consisting of 55 patients responded to instrument questions at three distinct time points: baseline prior to transition and twice after the transition at 6 weeks and 6 months. Questions investigated the point-of-care computer use, user's comfort, and impact on patient relationship with a nurse or provider. Patients perceived more use of the computer by Nurses and a declining...

Generating Data Visualizations of Longitudinal Cohort Ambient Air Pollution Exposure: Report-Back Intervention Development in Participatory Action Research
A civic engagement and data science design was used to develop a report-back intervention to address stakeholder concerns related to air emissions surrounding a coke oven factory near Buffalo, NY. This factory had historically emitted high levels of benzene pollution and ceased operation in October 2018 because of violations of the US Clean Air Act and US Resource Conservation and Recovery Act. Using publicly available air pollution and weather data, descriptive time series and wind-rose data visualizations were developed using open-source software as part of a two-page report-back brief. Data from two air toxics monitorin...

Implementing Oral Care as a Nursing Intervention to Reduce Hospital-Acquired Pneumonia Across the United States Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare System
Hospital-acquired pneumonia is a preventable complication. The primary source of pneumonia among hospitalized and long-term care residents is aspiration of bacteria present in the oral biofilm. Reducing the bacterial burden in the mouth through consistent oral care is associated with a reduction in the incidence of hospital-acquired pneumonia. Following a significant reduction in pneumonia among non-ventilated patients in the research pilots, the Veterans Health Administration deployed the evidence-based, nurse-led oral care intervention called Hospital Acquired Pneumonia Prevention by Engaging Nurses as quality improvemen...

Validation of “Personal Protective Equipment Conservation Strategies Tool” to Predict Consumption of N95s, Facemasks, and Gowns During Pandemic-Related Shortages
We sought to prospectively validate a model to predict the consumption of personal protective equipment in a pediatric emergency department during the COVID-19 pandemic. We developed the Personal Protective Equipment Conservation Strategies Tool, a Monte Carlo simulation model with input parameters defined by members of our emergency department personal protective equipment task force. Inputs include different conservation strategies that reflect dynamic reuse policies. Over the course of 4 consecutive weeks in April and May 2020, we used the model to predict the consumption of N95 respirators, facemasks, and gowns in our ...

Communicating Data, Information, and Knowledge in the Nursing Handoff
Miscommunication occurring during the nursing handoff continues to be a primary cause of sentinel events and adverse patient outcomes. The primary purpose of the nursing handoff is to communicate essential patient data, information, and knowledge to ensure the safe continued continuity of care. The aim of this study was to examine the content of the nurse-to-nurse change-of-shift handoff communication in terms of data, information, and knowledge for both bedside and nonbedside handoffs of a patient who has experienced a clinical event. The setting was an urban medical center on a medical-surgical floor. The sample consiste...

How to Support the Nursing Informatics Leadership Pipeline: Recommendations for Nurse Leaders and Professional Organizations
There is a need for nursing informatics leaders. However, there are not enough people educated and trained in informatics and leadership to fill that need. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to understand how professional organizations and nurse leaders support nursing informatics leadership development. This cross-sectional, descriptive study collected data via a scan of Web sites for eight nursing, informatics, and/or leadership professional organizations; interviews and surveys with nursing informatics leaders within the eight organizations; and a review of Web site, interview, and survey findings by nursing infor...

Frontline Nurse Feedback During the Development of a System to Track Cleaning of Portable Medical Equipment
As part of the development and testing of an innovative technology for tracking disinfection of portable medical equipment, end-user feedback was obtained during an initial trial on two acute care hospital units. The disinfection tracking device was installed on the computers-on-wheels and vital signs machines. Each device had the capability of detecting a cleaning event, reporting the event to an online database, and displaying the time since last cleaning event on a visual display. End-user feedback regarding functionality, usefulness of information provided, and impact on workflow was obtained by survey and facilitated ...
