Nurses' Utilization of Information Resources for Patient Care Tasks: A Survey of Critical Care Nurses in an Urban Hospital Setting
Critical care nurses manage complex patient care interventions under dynamic, time-sensitive and constrained conditions, yet clinical decision support systems for nurses are limited compared with advanced practice healthcare providers. In this work, we study and analyze nurses' information-seeking behaviors to inform the development of a clinical decision support system that supports nurses. Nurses from an urban midwestern hospital were recruited to complete an online survey containing eight open-ended questions about resource utilization for various nursing tasks and open space for additional insights. Frequencies and per...

Nurses' Perceptions of Using Personal Digital Assistants in Tertiary Hospitals
This study examined nurses' perceptions of personal digital assistants used as a barcode scanner for medication administration, blood transfusions, and blood collection. A total of 236 nurses participated in the survey using the instrument developed by the researchers. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, one-way analysis of variance, and the Scheffe test. Written responses to the advantages and drawbacks of using personal digital assistants were categorized by meaning. The results showed that the nurses perceived more drawbacks than advantages in using personal digital assistants because of nonwo...

Using the Omaha System to Determine Health and Social Problems of Roma Population in Istanbul: Secondary Data Analysis
This study was a cross-sectional secondary data analysis and the data were collected in two stages. First, the “Technical Assistance for Promoting Social Inclusion in Densely Roman Populated Areas Project (SIROMA)” Act team evaluated health problems among Roma individuals. Second, data were reanalyzed using the Omaha System. When sociodemographic and economic characteristics were evaluated, low education level, adolescent marriages, a high number of live births, soiled living areas, unemployment, and substance use were found in the Roma population. In this context, using the Omaha System, the frequently diagnosed healt...

Effect of Health Education via Mobile Application in Promoting Quality of Life Among Asthmatic Schoolchildren in Urban Malaysia During the COVID-19 Era: A Quasi-experimental Study
This study aims to assess the effect of health education via a mobile application in promoting the quality of life among schoolchildren with asthma in urban Malaysia during the COVID-19 era. A quasi-experimental, pre- and post-intervention design was used in this study involving a total of 214 students, randomly assigned into two groups (an intervention group and a control group). The control group received face-to-face health education, whereas the experimental group received health education via a mobile application. The findings showed that the total score of quality of life improved from a mean total score at pre-inter...

Cancer Survivors' Perspectives of Virtual Yoga for Chronic Chemotherapy-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Pain During the COVID-19 Pandemic
With the rise in telehealth due to the COVID-19 pandemic, further research is needed to determine how to optimize virtual delivery of existing integrative oncology interventions for cancer treatment–related symptoms. The purpose of this qualitative analysis was to explore cancer survivors' perspectives of the acceptability and satisfaction of an 8-week, virtual yoga intervention for cancer survivors with chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy pain. Fourteen participants with chronic chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy pain who completed the virtual yoga intervention were interviewed using a semistructu...

Tailored Parenting Plans of Young Adults With Sickle Cell Disease or Sickle Cell Trait
We present a secondary data analysis of experimental group data from a randomized controlled trial. Participants completed the valid and reliable Internet-based Sickle Cell Reproductive Health Knowledge Parenting Intent Questionnaire. We created a computerized algorithm that used participants' responses to generate tailored parenting plans based on their parenting preferences and partner's sickle cell status. Thirty-one different parenting plans were generated to meet the variety in the participants' preferences. The most frequently generated plan was for participants with sickle cell disease who had a partner with hemoglo...

The Appearance of Digital Competence in the Work of Health Sciences Educators: A Cross-sectional Study
The digital competence of health sciences educators is important for the delivery and development of modern education and lifelong learning. The aim of the study was to assess the appearance of digital competence in the work of Finnish health sciences educators and to determine whether educators' background factors are related to the areas of digital competence appearance. The European Framework for the Digital Competence of Educators was used as a theoretical background. The participants were Finnish health sciences educators (n = 388). Data were collected by quantitative survey and statistically analyzed. Results show th...

Assessing the Financial Sustainability of High-Fidelity and Virtual Reality Simulation for Nursing Education: A Retrospective Case Analysis
To stimulate classroom discussion and collaboration amid the COVID-19 pandemic, increasingly creative pedological methods for nursing education are necessary. Traditionally, high-fidelity simulation has been the standard for nursing education, but the use of virtual reality simulation is increasing. One of the major evaluative measures of simulation clinical training is the cost associated with each modality. In this retrospective case analysis, budget impact analysis methods were employed to compare high-fidelity simulation with virtual reality simulation. The components of each simulation pedagogy were compared in catego...

Expanding the Informatics Competencies of Nurse Practitioners Through Online Learning
Nurse practitioners' informatics competencies are not well-understood. Limited evidence alludes to the potential need to improve the informatics competencies of nurse practitioners. The primary purpose of this study was to analyze the informatics competencies of nurse practitioners, including nurses training to become nurse practitioners, before and after completing an online learning module in nursing informatics. Six topics were covered in the investigator-developed learning module. A pretest-posttest, one-group, quasi-experimental design was used in the study. The link to the study was emailed to members of a local nurs...

Usability Experience of a Personal Sleep Monitoring Device to Self-manage Sleep Among Persons 65 Years or Older With Self-reported Sleep Disturbances
This study followed a hybrid qualitative design using deductive and emergent coding derived from open-ended interviews (n = 25) after a period of 4 weeks using a wearable personal sleep monitoring device. Results expanded existing theoretical models on usability with the theme of personal meaning in the interaction between health and self-monitoring technology that were associated with age and technology use, privacy, and capability. Future studies for sleep health self-management and personally tailored interventions using personal sleep monitoring devices should continue to collect qualitative information in extending th...

Effortlessness and Security: Nurses' Positive Experiences With Work-Related Information Technology Use
In this study, we sought to understand the appraisals and emotions at the core of nurses' positive experiences with information technology use at work. We conducted focus groups and semistructured interviews with 15 ward nurses working at a large Swedish hospital. The data were analyzed qualitatively using process and causation coding. We found appraisals of easy goal accomplishment, doing less of a particular task, knowing what the situation is and what has to be done, mastering the system, reduced risk of mistakes and omissions, and assured access to patient information. Using design theory, we connected these appraisals...
