Elevated caproic acid production from one-stage anaerobic fermentation of organic waste and its selective recovery by electro-membrane process
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 30:130647. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130647. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA constructed microbial consortia-based strategy to enhance caproic acid production from one-stage mixed-fermentation of glucose was developed, which incubated with acidogens (Clostridium sensu stricto 1, 11 dominated) and chain elongators (including Clostridium sensu stricto 12, Sporanaerobacter, and Caproiciproducens) acclimated from anaerobic sludge. Significant product upgrading toward caproic acid (8.31 g‧L-1) and improved substrate degradation was achieved, which can be greatly attributed to the lactic acid pla...

Strain engineering of Bacillus coagulans with high osmotic pressure tolerance for effective L-lactic acid production from sweet sorghum juice under unsterile conditions
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 30:130648. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130648. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTOpen unsterile fermentation of the low-cost non-food crop, sweet sorghum, is an economically feasible lactic acid biosynthesis process. However, hyperosmotic stress inhibits microbial metabolism and lactic acid biosynthesis, and engineering strains with high osmotic tolerance is challenging. Herein, heavy ion mutagenesis combined with osmotic pressure enrichment was used to engineer a hyperosmotic-tolerant Bacillus coagulans for L-lactic acid production. The engineered strain had higher osmotic pressure tolerance, when...

Efficient synthesis of rare sugars from galactose in hot compressed water using eggshells as an environmentally friendly catalyst
Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 30;399:130642. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130642. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAqueous galactose solutions containing eggshell was heated at 120 °C to produce calcium supplements containing rare sugars. Galactose was isomerized to rare sugars with improving rare sugar yields compared to those without eggshell. Organic acids were also formed as byproducts during the reaction. These acids were neutralized by dissolving eggshells with increasing the calcium ion concentration in the solution. When eggshell components (calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, or calcium phosphate) were used for th...

Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 29:130646. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130646. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe present study evaluated the production potential of CH4, carboxylic acids and alcohols from a mixed culture enriched using synthetic syngas. The influence of syngas concentration on the microbial community and products productivity and selectivity was investigated. The results demonstrated the enrichment of a mesophilic mixed culture capable of converting CO and H2 mainly to CH4 and acetate, along with butyrate. The selectivity values showed that acetate production was enhanced during the first cycle in all conditi...

Bioresour Technol. 2024 Mar 28:130645. doi: 10.1016/j.biortech.2024.130645. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHardwood kraft lignin from the pulping industry is burned or discarded. Its valorization was conducted by subjecting fractionation, amination with ethylenediamine, diethylenetriamine, and monoethanolamine, and crosslinking with formaldehyde or glyoxal to obtain bio-based wood adhesives. Acetone-soluble and insoluble hardwood kraft lignin were prepared and subjected to amination and then crosslinking. Fourier transform infrared, 13C NMR, 15N NMR, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed successful amination...

Machine learning assisted combined systems of wastewater treatment plants with constructed wetlands optimal decision-making
This study proposed an efficient framework for optimizing the design and operation of combined systems of wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and constructed wetlands (CW). The framework coupled a WWTP model with a CW model and used a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm to identify trade-offs between energy consumption, effluent quality, and construction cost. Compared to traditional design and management approaches, the framework achieved a 27 % reduction in WWTP energy consumption or a 44 % reduction in CW cost while meeting strict effluent discharge limits for Chinese WWTP. The framework also identified feasible decis...

Differential surface modification mechanism of chalcopyrite and pyrite by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and its response to bioflotation
This study addresses this challenge by isolating and enriching Thiobacillus ferrooxidans (T·f) from acidic mine drainage, employing it as a biosurfactant. The modification mechanism of T·f was thoroughly analyzed. Fe dissolution through biological oxidation formed a passivation layer (jarosite [KFe3(SO4)2(OH)6], elemental sulfur (S0), and metal sulfides (Cu/Fe-S) on the surface of minerals. Metal oxides, hydroxides, and sulfates were detected on the surface of two minerals, but the difference was that elemental sulfur (S0) and copper sulfide (Cu-S) were detected on the surface of chalcopyrite. elucidating the fundamental...
