Carriage of ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli among children in rural Ghana: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionsThe carriage of ESBL-EC and ESBL-KP among children with and without diarrhoea in the Agogo community with a high prevalence ofblaCTX-M-15 is noteworthy, highlighting the importance of both the population as a possible reservoir. This study reports for the first time the ESBL geneblaCTX-M-28 among the studied populations in Ghana. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

The incidence of nosocomial bloodstream infection and urinary tract infection in Australian hospitals before and during the COVID-19 pandemic: an interrupted time series study
ConclusionThese mixed findings reflect the uncertainty of the effect the pandemic has had on HAI ’s. Factors to consider in this analysis include local epidemiology, differences between public and private sector facilities, changes in patient populations and profiles between hospitals, and timing of enhanced IPC interventions. Future studies which factor in these differences may provide furth er insight on the effect of COVID-19 on HAIs. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

Core components of infection prevention and control programs at the facility level in Kazakhstan: key challenges and opportunities
ConclusionsExisting IPC programs, infrastructure, IPC staffing, workload and supplies present within hospitals in Kazakhstan allow for implementation of effective IPC. Development and dissemination of IPC guidelines based on the recommended WHO IPC core components, improved IPC training system, and implementation of systematic monitoring of IPC practices will be important first steps towards implementing targeted IPC improvement plans in facilities. Sanitary installations and wastewater plumbing as reservoir for the long-term circulation and transmission of carbapenemase producing Citrobacter freundii clones in a hospital setting
ConclusionsOur findings suggest long-term circulation and transmission of carbapenemase producingC. freundii clones in hospital sanitary installations despite surveillance, daily cleaning and intermittent disinfection protocols. We propose a role for the wastewater drainage system in the spread within and between rooms and for the sanitary installations in the indirect transmission via bioaerosol plumes. To tackle this problem, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary including careful design and maintenance of the plumbing system. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

Knowledge, attitude and practice of infection prevention and control precautions among laboratory staff: a mixed-methods systematic review
ConclusionThere is a gap among KAP related to the implementation of IPC guidelines, which indicates that laboratory staff may be at high risk of acquiring infections in the workplace. These findings suggest that training (including IPC precautions, safety policies, safety equipment and materials, safety activities, initial biohazard handling, ongoing monitoring and potential exposure) of laboratory staff to increase their knowledge about IPC precautions could improve their use of these precautions. Train-the-Trainers in hand hygiene facilitate the implementation of the WHO hand hygiene multimodal improvement strategy in Japan: evidence for the role of local trainers, adaptation, and sustainability
ConclusionsTTTs were successfully adapted and implemented in Japan, leading to sustained hand hygiene promotion activities by local trainers over three years. Further research is warranted to assess the long-term impact on local hand hygiene promotion in different settings. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

Central-line associated bloodstream infections in intensive care units before and after implementation of daily antiseptic bathing with chlorhexidine or octenidine: a post-hoc analysis of a cluster-randomised controlled trial
ConclusionsIn this post-hoc analysis of a cRCT, the application of 2% chlorhexidine-impregnated cloths reduced ICU-attributable CLABSI. This preventive effect of chlorhexidine was restricted to CLABSI caused by gram-positive pathogens (CoNS). In contrast, 0.08% octenidine wash mitts did not reduce CLABSI rates in ICUs.Trial registration Registration number DRKS00010475, registration date August 18, 2016. APSIC dental infection prevention and control (IPC) guidelines
ConclusionsDental facilities should aim for excellence in infection prevention and control practices as this is part of patient safety. The guidelines that come with a checklist help dental facilities to identify gaps for improvement to reach this goal. (Source: Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control)

APSIC guide for prevention of catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)
ConclusionsHealthcare facilities should aim for excellence in care of patients with urinary catheters. It is recommended that healthcare facilities have a catheter associated urinary tract infection prevention program as part of their Infection Prevention and Control program. Knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of Egyptians towards antibiotic use in the community: can we do better?
ConclusionsAlthough awareness of antibiotic resistance is rising, some wrong perceptions hold fast. This highlights the need for patient and healthcare-tailored awareness sessions as part of a structured and national public health program directed to the Egyptian population. Surgical site infection surveillance in German hospitals: a national survey to determine the status quo of digitalization
ConclusionsThe degree to which digital solutions were employed for SSI surveillance differed considerably between surgical departments in Germany. Improving availability and accessibility of information in HIS and meeting interoperability standards will be prerequisites for increasing the amount of data exported directly from HIS to national databases and laying the foundation for automated SSI surveillance on a broad scale. Appropriate antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance: knowledge, attitudes and behaviour of medical students and their needs and preferences for learning
ConclusionsOur results show that even medical students who were interested in the AMR problem were not able to use antibiotics appropriately due to gaps in knowledge and a lack of clinical skills. Based on the insights gained in the learning preferences of students and their content priorities, improved student-centred teaching materials should be developed.
