Outcome of COVID-19-positive children with heart disease and grown-ups with congenital heart disease: A multicentric study from India

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric cardiac services in India
Conclusions : The current COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted the delivery of pediatric cardiac care across India with two-third reduction in hospitalizations and cardiac surgeries. In an already resource-constrained environment, the impact of such a massive reduction in the number of surgeries could be significant over the coming years. These findings may prove useful in formulating strategy to manage subsequent waves of ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. (Source: Annals of Pediatric Cardiology)

Rapid progression of aortic stenosis in a 3-month-old infant with bicuspid aortic valve and DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome

A 3-month-old female was diagnosed at 1 month of age with DeSanto-Shinawi syndrome (DSS) and bicuspid aortic valve with trivial stenosis. The aortic valve stenosis progressed to severe within 2 months and required balloon aortic valvuloplasty. Coarctation of aorta intervention: When covered stents should have been first choice ?
We describe our experience of three cases of coarctation stenting, in which covered stenting should have been the preferred choice. A 32-year-old female with Turner's syndrome and severe CoA developed dissection after balloon angioplasty which was successfully managed with a covered stent. A 27-year-old female with near atresia of aorta was managed with balloon expandable stent which remained underexpanded despite post dilatation. A prospective randomized clinical study of perioperative oral thyroid hormone treatment for children undergoing surgery for congenital heart diseases
Conclusions : In infants and small children undergoing corrective cardiac surgery, perioperative oral thyroid hormone therapy reduces the severity of postoperative NTI. It increases the serum level of thyroid hormones but the therapy does not translate to better hemodynamics, reduced inotropic requirement, reduced ventilatory requirement, improved myocardial function or reduced ICU stay when compared to placebo. Aortic size in children: Systolic measurements are different from diastolic measurements
Conclusions : Systolic measurements for the AOR, STJ, and AAO were larger than diastolic measurements. Normal reference values are utilized to design treatment for patients with abnormal aortic sizes, and the timing in the cardiovascular cycle used to decide the reference values should be equivalent to the timing used to make measurements in clinical practice.
