A Workshop to Showcase the Diversity of Scientists to Middle School Students
This study aimed to examine these feelings of inclusivity in STEMM by offering an interactive workshop asking middle schoolers to identify scientists from various racial and gender identities. Here, we present a qualitative analysis pertaining to a workshop focused on identity administered to middle schoolers. We found that a plurality of students had a positive experience discussing diversity in science and recognizing underrepresented individuals as scientists. Implications for future education and outreach are further discussed.PMID:38234295 | DOI:10.1152/advan.00117.2023 (Source: Adv Physiol Educ)

The pulmonary physiology of exercise
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jan 11. doi: 10.1152/advan.00067.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe pulmonary system is the first and last 'line of defense' in terms of maintaining blood gas homeostasis during exercise. Our review provides the reader with an overview of how the pulmonary system responds to acute exercise. We undertook this endeavor to provide a companion article to "Cardiovascular Response to Exercise" which is published in Advances in Physiological Education. Together, these articles provide the readers with a solid foundation of the cardiopulmonary response to acute exercise in healthy individuals. The inten...

Beyond the Curriculum: Unveiling Medical Students' Drivers and Barriers to Research Participation at Alfaisal University
This study at Alfaisal University (AU) aimed to explore the motivations, benefits, and challenges faced by medical students in extracurricular research activities. Using a mixed-method approach, we combined quantitative surveys with qualitative group interviews. Findings revealed that both extrinsic (e.g., enhancing post-graduate training prospects) and intrinsic factors (e.g., personal interest and skill refinement) significantly motivate students to be involved in research activities. Participants unanimously acknowledged skill enhancement, particularly in literature comprehension, creative ideation, and networking. Howe...

Lessons from the year of COVID-19: insights, projections, and next steps in a high school pathophysiology classroom
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Mar 1;48(1):105-111. doi: 10.1152/advan.00084.2023. Epub 2024 Jan 11.ABSTRACTThe COVID-19 pandemic not only affected education at its peak, it continues to affect learning in its aftermath. High schools were forced to transition to remote learning, throwing students and educators alike into a new reality. Recovering from the pandemic has forced the need for innovative ways to engage students. Some successful attempts at modifying quizzes, lab activities, and assessments in my pathophysiology classroom are described in this article. In addition, students were also given extra time on assessments, and ...

"Aquilibria: The Battle to Balance" - A Narrative Card and Board Game on Acid-Base Regulation for First-Year Medical Students
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jan 11. doi: 10.1152/advan.00220.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRecognizing the growing value of Game-Based Learning in medical education, this study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the innovation, "Aquilibria - The Battle to Balance", a creative narrative card and board game in improving learners' understanding and application of the concepts of acid-base balance. In this mixed-method study, 120 first-year medical students participated. The innovation employed a card and board style integrated with a captivating story. Students were divided into small groups of 6 each with a facilitator. ...

Edelman Gamblegrams: A Tool to Teach and Learn Disorders of Water/Plasma Tonicity Homeostasis
This article introduces an innovative teaching and learning tool called "Edelman Gamblegrams" that aims to help medical learners better understand disorders related to water/plasma tonicity homeostasis, i.e., hyponatremia and hypernatremia. Gamblegrams, named after physician James L. Gamble, are bar diagrams displaying the relative abundance of extracellular anions and cations, and are commonly used in the analysis of acid-base disorders. The Edelman equation represents the physiological variables that determine plasma sodium concentration, namely, total body sodium mass, total body potassium mass and total body water volu...

The Complete Guide to Hosting a Guest Speaker
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jan 4. doi: 10.1152/advan.00187.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe ability to effectively host a guest speaker is an important but underemphasized aspect of career development in the physiological and broader biomedical sciences. Currently, there is scant information available to guide early-career scientists through this multi-faceted, subtlety-filled process. In this Personal View on Training and Mentoring, I first describe the importance and benefits of hosting visiting speakers. I then discuss the many considerations involved in selecting an appropriate speaker and how to formulate the invit...

MestreChef Nutritional game: an alternative method to promote nutrition facts label reading in obesity outreach activities
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Jan 4. doi: 10.1152/advan.00044.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTReading nutrition facts label is a competency for which training is given in several nutrition education programs, especially in obesity outreach workshops. The top trump-style card game is commonly used in obesity prevention educational programs to engage participants in reading nutrition facts labels; however, the success of TV cooking shows among children and teenagers has not been explored for educational purposes. This paper is a descriptive study of developing a gamified activity as part of the one-time outreach workshop facili...
