The Inverted Case Study Technique: Changing the Traditional Case-Study Approach to Prioritize Physiological Mechanisms Over Correct Diagnosis and Treatment
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.1152/advan.00180.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe traditional case study has been used as a learning tool for the past 100 years and in our program, graduate physiology students are presented with a real-world scenario and must determine the diagnosis and treatment of the patient. We found that students defaulted to memorization of disease with treatment and bypassed gaining an understanding of the mechanistic physiology behind disease and treatment. To adjust our student's approach, we developed a novel way to enhance student learning. In order to accomplish this shift from me...

Modelling the extracellular potential generated by a muscle fiber as the output signal of a convolutional system
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.1152/advan.00238.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA central topic in Bioelectricity is the generation of the extracellular potential that results from the propagation of a transmembrane action potential along the muscle fiber. However, the way in which the extracellular potential is determined by the propagating action potential is difficult to describe, conceptualize and visualize. Moreover, traditional quantitative approaches aimed at modelling extracellular potentials involve complex mathematical formulations, which do not allow students to visualize how the extracellular potent...

A Partially Flipped Physiology Classroom Improves the Deep Learning Approach of Medical Students
This study aimed to compare the impact of the partially flipped physiology classroom (PFC) and the traditional lecture-based classroom (TLC) on students' learning approaches. The study was conducted over five months at Xiangya School of Medicine from February to July 2022 and comprised 71 students majoring in clinical medicine. The experimental group (n = 32) received PFC teaching, while the control group (n = 39) received TLC. The Revised Two-Factor Study Process Questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) was used to assess the impact of different teaching methods on students' learning approaches. After the PFC, students got significantly ...

PharmaMemory: an interactive, animated web application for learning autonomic physiology and pharmacology
Discussion PharmaMemory utilizes challenged recall, visual stimulation, and interactive learning to provide users with a multifaceted learning tool. Preliminary data suggest that students find this method of learning beneficial. Further studies are needed to assess PharmaMemory compared to more traditional learning methods such as PowerPoint or text-based learning. Additionally, further research is needed to quantitatively assess reduction in cognitive load.PMID:38545642 | DOI:10.1152/advan.00214.2022 (Source: Adv Physiol Educ)

Sourcebook Update: RBC hemolysis studies using a simple modified blood film technique
This study presents a novel approach to observing osmotic effect on red blood cells (RBCs) using a simple, modified blood film technique. Aimed at enhancing educational understanding of cellular behavior in different osmotic environments, this method provides a practical hand-on learning experience. By applying various osmotic solutions to prepared blood films and observing the resultant morphological changes in RBCs under a microscope, this technique allows for direct visualization of osmosis in action.PMID:38545643 | DOI:10.1152/advan.00033.2024 (Source: Adv Physiol Educ)

Utilizing a Medical School Outreach Program to Help High School Students Explore the Impact of Food Security and Ultra-Processed Foods on Health Risks
Adv Physiol Educ. 2024 Mar 28. doi: 10.1152/advan.00115.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTWe offered an enrichment program for high school students with the theme "The Environment, Health, and You" during the Summer of 2022 and the Spring of 2023. We developed several educational modules for high school students that provided them with an opportunity to learn and explore the foundations of physiological systems, nutrient needs to maintain health, and the impact that environmental factors can have on them. The modules included videos, discussion boards, games, readings, and labs. These modules were integrated into the fir...
