Madrid Study (Spain) on the Prevalence and Characteristics of Outpatients With Dual Disorders
Although dual disorders (DD), addiction, and other mental disorders (MDs) are common in patients using mental health and addiction treatment services, they are not routinely screened for and diagnosed by most health experts. The aim of this article was to present the most relevant findings from the Madrid study on DD in a clinical sample from the Community of Madrid mental health and substance misuse service care networks. The sample consisted of 837 outpatients from Madrid: 208 patients from mental health services and 629 from substance misuse services. The diagnostic process is difficult and DD has been associated to more severe condition and worse outcomes. Clinically is associated to more relapses, higher suicide risk and less adherence. Dual diagnosis requires complex therapeutic approaches to be able to adapt the treatment to the dual nature of the problem. The treatment should including medical, psychopathologic and social approach. Polymedications and polydrug use is very common, so it is important to understand the effec...

What Have We Learned From the Agonist Opioid Treatment of Dual Disorder Heroin Addicts?
Conclusions: Data were hard to compare, and were incomplete as regards the type of substance and the diagnostic criteria for psychiatric diagnosis. The state-dependent (intoxication) dual disorder is probably overrated, whereas some diagnoses may be initially disguised by on-going effective treatment, and then reemerge clearly after treatment discontinuation. The chronology of illness does not offer a reasonable criterion for the classification of dual disorder. The anticraving intervention is often the priority, and is likely to produce, as one favorable effect, the retention of dual disorder patients. The dosage of opi...

Housing Status, Psychiatric Symptoms, and Substance Abuse Outcomes Among Sober Living House Residents Over 18 Months
Studies show individuals entering sober living recovery houses (SLHs) make significant, sustained improvement on measures of substance abuse problems, employment, and arrests. The current study assessed changes in housing status among SLH residents over 18 months and the relative influences of housing status and psychiatric distress on substance abuse outcomes. Two hundred forty-one men and 58 women, all age 18 and older, were interviewed within their first week of entering 20 SLHs and again at 6-, 12-, and 18-month follow-up. Between entry into the SLHs and 18-month follow-up homelessness declined from 16% to 4%, marginal...

Comorbidity of Alcohol Use Disorder and Depression: A Case Report and Review of the Literature
Conclusions: Pharmacological clinical trials published in literature typically measures several things: if the treatment was able to decrease depressive symptoms, if the treatment was able to decrease alcohol consumption, and if the treatment was able to prevent relapse. Current studies published have looked at the effects of using different selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, by itself or in combination with anticraving medication to decrease depressive symptoms, and alcohol consumption. However, it is unlikely that a specific antidepressant can reduce depression and also decrease alcohol consumption in dual diagnose...
