What are Common Causes of Anaphylaxis?
Discussion Anaphylaxis is a potentially life-threatening hypersensitivity reaction of the body. Usually anaphylaxis is IgE mediated but complement-mediated immune complex reactions or IgG mediated reactions can cause anaphylaxis. Usually mucous membranes or skin are involved, but it is a systemic disease process with at least 2 systems involved (respiratory is second most common followed by gastrointestinal system). The epidemiology is difficult to discern but the estimated incidence is about 50-112 episodes per 100,000 person-years and estimated prevalence is 0.3-5.1%. There is data supporting an increased incidence. Over...

Toxic brain edema and brain death after scorpion envenomation - G ün E, Botan E, Bektaş, Kendirli T.
Scorpion sting is common in some global regions and mostly causes local envenoming of varying severity. Some estimates suggest that perhaps only 10% of those stung by even the most medically important species develop severe systemic envenomation; however, ... (Source: SafetyLit)

B.1.617 can duck antibodies, but vax blunts sting: Study
Covid-19 ’s so-called ‘Indian variant’ has a “modest” ability to “escape” the antibodies developed by vaccines, but it can, at best, cause moderate illness among those who have got the shots, scientists from India and the UK have found, establishing that “vaccination is still protective for t he majority of people”. Moffitt researchers discover regulatory pathway that blocks immune response against cancer
(H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center& Research Institute) In a new article published in the journal Immunity, Moffitt Cancer Center researchers show that TIM-3 inhibits the STING signaling pathway in dendritic cells, thereby blocking their ability to elicit an immune response. Free COVID-19 Vaccines Are Luring Visitors to Dracula ’s Castle in Transylvania
Residents of Romania who find themselves in central Transylvania this May now have the option of getting vaccinated at a legendary location from horror history: Bran Castle. Every weekend this month, the fortress that’s believed to be the inspiration behind Count Dracula’s lair in Bram Stoker’s 19th-century gothic novel Dracula will be home to a free COVID-19 vaccination center where Romanians can get a Pfizer-BioNTech shot without making an appointment—or, as a Facebook post announcing the event put it, “another kind of sting.” Daniel Mihailescu—AFP/Getty ImagesA banner reading &#...

Pinpointing cysteine oxidation sites by high-resolution proteomics reveals a mechanism of redox-dependent inhibition of human STING
Protein function is regulated by posttranslational modifications (PTMs), among which reversible oxidation of cysteine residues has emerged as a key regulatory mechanism of cellular responses. Given the redox regulation of virus-host interactions, the identification of oxidized cysteine sites in cells is essential to understand the underlying mechanisms involved. Here, we present a proteome-wide identification of reversibly oxidized cysteine sites in oxidant-treated cells using a maleimide-based bioswitch method coupled to mass spectrometry analysis. We identified 2720 unique oxidized cysteine sites within 1473 proteins wit...

Trillions of ‘Brood X’ Cicadas Are About to Emerge Across the U.S. to Sing, Mate and Die. Here’s What to Expect
This coming May, millions of people around the United States will have front-row seats to an extraordinary entomological event: Trillions of Brood X cicadas across 15 states will emerge almost synchronously after having spent the last 17 years underground. The males will take up elevated positions, each buzzing as loud as a lawnmower to attract females. After mating, the adult cicadas will die off en masse just about as quickly as they arrived—likely sometime in late June or July—while their offspring tunnel underground, not to emerge until 2038, when the dance will begin anew. Annual, or “dog day,”...
