Botox may be useful in treating stomach cancers
ConclusionThese laboratory experiments show that nerves have a role in the development and advancement of stomach cancer. The early experiments in mice found that stopping the nervous supply by either cutting the vagus nerve or injecting it with Botox improved survival rates and reduced cancer growth. The Botox injections were not performed on any humans in this study. However, an early-phase clinical trial in humans with inoperable stomach cancer began in Norway in January 2013, with the results expected in 2016. This will determine the safety of such a procedure and work out the number of people who would need to be treat...

Wish I ’ d a hysterectomy years ago! – Sharon ’ s Story
At the age of 40 I was diagnosed with fibroids. A scan confirmed I had about 10 of them, the largest was almost the size of a rugby football, the others between the size of a tangerine and an orange. All of them subserosal so my uterus was quite deformed. As I had no intention of having children, the mistake I made was not opting to go for a hysterectomy immediately. Instead I thought I would try embolization, mainly because I was self employed and taking between 2 – 3 months off work was not cost effective for me, so a 2 week recovery post-embolization was a lot more appealing. I had it done – not a pleasant p...

Statins side effects are minimal, study argues
ConclusionThis meta-analysis pooled results from 29 studies and has shown a very small increased risk of newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus. This is the same as the decreased risk of any cause of death in people taking statins, compared to placebo, to prevent a heart attack or stroke. The researchers point out some limitations to the meta-analysis: Each study did not report on all of the side effects, meaning that for each category of side effect, the number of participants differed. The side effect categories were only included if at least 500 people had reported suffering from it. This means there may be numerous other ...

Discussing global warming: why does this have to be so hard? | John Abraham
How a scientist looks at public discussions of climate changeClimate change long ago joined the topics of politics, religion, and money as something you just can't talk about. It seems that whenever these topics get brought up, previously friendly people get beet-red faces and leave with clenched fists and indigestion. But why?For people who work in this field, on either side of the issue, we tend to get focused on areas of disagreement and nuances. This leads us to quickly defend our positions with a fervor that would not otherwise be needed. For climate "insiders" (and yes, this includes folks who downplay concerns about...

Gastric balloon pill launched in UK
Most of the UK media has got rather overexcited about the UK launch of Obalon, a gastric balloon in pill form that can be swallowed to help overweight people achieve rapid weight loss without invasive surgery. The Obalon pills are designed to be inflated into balloons in the stomach, reducing the free volume of the stomach and therefore how much a person can eat before they feel full. Intra-gastric balloons are not new, and are sometimes provided to extremely obese people through the NHS, although these often have to be surgically implanted. Obalon has been approved in Europe for overweight and obese adults, but in the UK...
