Do we all need to learn aortic valve repair the HAART way?
We read with great interest the recent article by Lancaster and colleagues1 describing hemispherical aortic annuloplasty reconstructive technology (HAART) in adolescents, which requires implantation of a rigid ring inside the aorta (Figure  1, A). A few immediate questions come to mind. Is implantation of an internal ring necessary if efficient and durable stabilization could be achieved with other annuloplasty techniques? Would the expected endothelization of the ring induce fibrosis in the high-shear-stress subaortic area? Would th is, in turn, create an iatrogenic subaortic membrane and induce the spread of the fibrosi...

Impact factors of Blastocystis hominis infection in persons living with human immunodeficiency virus: a large-scale, multi-center observational study from China
ConclusionsThe study revealed that VL was a better predictor of Bh infection than CD4+ T cell counts. It is crucial to consider the simultaneous surveillance of HIV VL and CD4+ T cell counts in PLWH in the regions with high level of socioeconomic development. The integrated approach can offer more comprehensive and accurate understanding in the aspects of Bh infection and other opportunistic infections, the efficacy of therapeutic drugs, and the assessment of preventive and control strategies.Graphical Abstract (Source: Infectious Diseases of Poverty)

Notably this latent reservoir of infected cells will produce replication-com...

Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate mediates neuronal injury by inducing neurotoxicity
ConclusionOur findings indicated that TDF may induce neuronal cell apoptosis through increasing the intracellular ROS and the expression level of caspase-3, which may be related to the increasing prevalence of HAND. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases)

The use of the brief symptom inventory among youth living with HIV: a scoping review
AIDS Rev. 2023;25(2):88-95. doi: 10.24875/AIDSRev.22000016.ABSTRACTThe brief symptom inventory (BSI), a 53-item measure that assesses psychological distress, is a popular tool for measuring mental health symptoms among youth living with HIV (YLH) in the United States (US); however, it has been used inconsistently with this population. This scoping review summarizes discrepancies in the use of the BSI to identify opportunities to improve systematism and make recommendations for clinicians and researchers, and highlights correlates of psychological distress among YLH as measured by the BSI. Databases searched included PsycIN...
