Fortimedix launches short instruments for SymphonX single-port platform
Fortimedix Surgical said today it launched a shorter set of instruments for its SymphonX single-port surgical platform in the US.
The newly launched product line offers shorter instrumentation for use with the SymphonX surgical platform, a single-port system designed for microlaparoscopic surgical procedures, Fortimedix said.
The instrument portfolio for the SymphonX system includes products for grasping, mobilizing, dissecting, retracting, cutting, cauterizing, ligating and suction and irrigation of tissues and vessels, the Netherlands-based company said.

Gore touts 1st commercial use of Tag thoracic stent graft
W.L. Gore & Associates said today its Tag conformable thoracic stent graft was used in its 1st commercial procedure after the system won CE Mark approval in the European Union last month.

(Reuters) – The world’s top medical technology companies are turning to robots to help with complex knee surgery, promising quicker procedures and better results in operations that often leave patients dissatisfied.

Intuitive Surgical wins FDA nod for inguinal hernia repairs with da Vinci Xi
Intuitive Surgical (NSDQ:ISRG) said today it won FDA clearance for inguinal hernia repairs with its da Vinci Xi robotic surgical system.
Inguinal hernias occur when tissue presses through openings in muslces of the groin, and requires surgery to repair, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said.
Intuitive said that patients who undergo robotic-assisted hernia repairs experience less pain, have a low rate of returning hernias and have shorter hospital stays when compared to open or laparoscopic approaches.

Tela Bio touted data this week for its OviTex reinforced bioscaffold used for hernia repair and abdominal wall reconstruction.
The device combines biologic material and polymer, allowing for free movement of fluid and cells through the mesh. Tela Bio’s chief medical officer is slated to present initial feedback from surgeons using the device since it won FDA 510(k) clearance in June last year.

Tela Bio launches post-clinical OviTex ventral hernia repair study
Tela Bio said today it initiated a post-market clinical study of its OviTex reinforced bioscaffold designed for soft tissue repair, enrolling the 1st patient at La Jolla, Calif.’s Scripps Clinic.

Opioid Use Common Even After Minor Surgery
This study shows that new chronic opioid use after surgery may be one of the most common complications after surgery,” said lead study author Dr. Chad Brummett of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
“Given that the rates of new chronic use did not differ between major and minor surgery, this suggests that patients continue to use their opioids for reasons other than the pain from the surgery,” Brummett added by email.
Addressing patients’ acute pain during their recovery from surgery may be a way to prevent them from becoming a statistic in the opioid epidemic, he suggested.
