Weight Loss Drug Wegovy Can Also Reduce Risk of Serious Heart Events, Study Shows
Popular weight loss drugs have dominated news headlines and social media, mostly for their ability to help people shed pounds and control diabetes. But now there is evidence that one of the drugs, semaglutide, can also help reduce the risk of dying from heart disease in some patients. The drug semaglutide is sold under the brand names Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus. This trial, however, only studied the effects of Wegovy, which is semaglutide at 2.4mg in injectable form, and currently approved for weight management. The results of a much-anticipated study, sponsored by semaglutide’s maker Novo Nordisk, investigating t...

AI analysis of chest CT exams predicts cardiovascular disease
Tuesday, November 28 | 3:00 p.m.-3:10 p.m. | T7-SSCA06-1 | Room E353BA deep-learning algorithm can predict a patient’s risk of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) from analysis of a single chest CT image, according to a group of researchers from Harvard Medical School.Although a patient’s coronary artery calcium score (CAC) from a cardiac CT exam can be used to refine a patient’s risk of ASCVD, presenter Vineet Kalathur Raghu, PhD, and colleagues wanted to explore the potential utility of chest CT studies for this crucial task. To accomplish this goal, they developed CT-CV-Risk, a deep-learning algorithm t...

AI algorithm predicts morbidity, mortality on spine DEXA exams
Tuesday, November 28 | 10:00 a.m.-10:10 a.m. | T3-SSMK05-4 | Room E352In this Tuesday morning talk, researchers will describe how a deep-learning algorithm’s assessment of biological age on dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) exams can facilitate morbidity and mortality predictions.A group led by presenter Alex Cheng sought to determine if AI could be used to estimate biological age on DEXA images and if this measure was associated with cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality. They then used lateral and lumbar spine DEXA data from nearly 45,000 participants in the UK Biobank to train a convolutional neural net...

Should We End Obesity?
It’s unusual for a medication to become a household name; even more uncommon for its branding to become, like Advil, shorthand for an entire class of products; and rarest of all, for it to change not just U.S. medicine, but U.S. culture. Ozempic has done all three. Approved in 2017 as a type 2 diabetes medication, Ozempic has largely made its name—and a fortune for its manufacturer, Novo Nordisk—as a weight-loss aid. Novo Nordisk knew early on that diabetes patients often lost weight on the drug, but even company executives couldn’t have guessed how widely it would eventually take off as both ...
