Current influenza vaccines only confer protection against homologous viruses. We synthesized pulmonary surfactant (PS)–biomimetic liposomes encapsulating 2',3'-cyclic guanosine monophosphate–adenosine monophosphate (cGAMP), an agonist of the interferon gene inducer STING (stimulator of interferon genes). Clinical trial testing topical cream plus influenza vaccine in progress
(NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases) A Phase 1 clinical trial examining whether a topical cream can enhance the immune response conferred by a 'pre-pandemic' influenza vaccine is underway at Baylor College of Medicine, a Vaccine and Treatment Evaluation Unit (VTEU) funded by NIAID. Investigators are evaluating whether imiquimod cream, commonly used to treat genital warts and certain skin cancers, can boost the body's immune response to an H5N1 influenza vaccine. Human infection with avian influenza A(H7N9) virus in China – update
Since March 2013, when the avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection was first detected in humans, a total of 1567 laboratory-confirmed human cases, including at least 615 deaths1, have been reported to WHO (Figure 1) in accordance with the International Health Regulations (2005).
