Blueberries and Red Grapes
The sugar consumed by eating whole fruit is not the same as refined sugar contained in soda. And the nutrition content of fruit is beneficial.  It has been noted that eating fruit does not aggravate blood sugar for diabetics like eating junk food. Blueberries, apples, grapes and grapefruit appear to be beneficial for diabetics. Blueberries and red grapes may work with vitamin D to boost immunity. (Source: Fixin' Healthcare)

Top 5 Foods to Help You Sleep Better and Stay Healthier
Many adults today suffer insomnia. If not that, they rarely have a restful night's sleep. They are usually restless, cannot seem to find a comfortable position to sleep in, and are easily distracted by odd sounds that are common at night. There are also people who get enough hours of sleep, and yet they wake up tired, sluggish, and wanting to crawl under the covers again. The usual solutions are to get a prescription from a physician (for those who are diagnosed to be insomniacs), and to change the bed for a moderately softer mattress—preferably, ones stuffed with memory foam. Pillows that are too soft or too hard are a...

Low-FODMAP Diet: A New Fad?
By Amy Campbell Back in 2009 (can it really be that long ago?), I wrote a short series on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is a condition (not a disease) characterized by a number of symptoms including bloating, cramping, gas, diarrhea, and constipation. About one in five Americans has IBS, and having it can range from being mildly annoying to downright debilitating. There are different kinds of treatments available, including changing one's diet, exercising, stress reduction, and medication. A treatment from down under People who have IBS will tell you that sometimes the above approaches work for them, and sometimes th...

Building Unity Farm - The Trails
Unity Farm has a rich diversity of natural woodlands, wetlands, meadows, paddocks, and orchards.  The house and barn are located on an upland plateau surrounded by white pine, sweet birch, poplar, white ash, red oak, and red maple.   The woodlands to the south, west and north wrap the upper plateau.  The woodland zone includes a forested wetland that collects the upland water and directs it to the north via a swale.   To the east, the land is a grassy 6:1 slope from the top of the orchard to the edge of the forested wetland that connects to the meadow.Over a mile of trails connects the natural features....

Work on Stereognosis with food.
The other day I was eating a cup filled with blueberries, cherries, and tiny grapes, while driving. I would reach into cup holder with right hand and keeping eyes on road, so it was all via stereognosis, ie eyeballs on my fingers, that I would know which gruit it was. I realized it was a great way to work with kids on stereognosis in an efficient and motivating and fun way. For example you could fill a cup with items like small twizzler bites and cocoa puffs and have the kid figure out which one he was grabbing if he couldn't see. You could incorporate a lot of descriptive words and ask questions about whether it feels lon...

The Healthful Vegan Diet
‘Let your food be your medicine, and your medicine be your food.’ ~Hippocrates By Leo Babauta Eat plants. Those two words are the best things I’ve learned about diet, and if you stick to that, you’re likely be pretty healthy. That said, eating a vegan diet (no animal products) doesn’t necessarily equate to a healthy diet, despite what many believe. Yes, vegans on average are healthier and leaner than the average person. But that’s an average — there are unhealthy vegans. How is that possible? You can eat lots of sweets, fried foods, processed foods, foods with white flour (br...

Detrimental Effects From Dietary Antioxidant Supplementation
At this point the general consensus is that dietary supplementation of antioxidant compounds is of either no benefit or mildly harmful to long term health. The only methods of extending life via the introduction of antioxidant compounds involve careful targeting to the mitochondria, such that damaging oxidant molecules generated there are swept up, but the oxidant molecules used in signaling processes elsewhere in cells and tissues are not. The benefits of exercise, for example, rest upon slightly raised levels of reactive oxygen species which can be blocked by high levels of antioxidants in the diet: In older men, a natu...

Is Undiagnosed Pre-diabetes Highly Prevalent in Early Alzheimer’s Disease?
The number of people with glucose intolerance (pre-diabetes) was much higher than expected. I was surprised by how many people didn’t know they were pre-diabetic, and these are individuals who already get the best medical care. +Alzheimer's Reading Room When Georgetown University neurologist R. Scott Turner, MD, PhD, began enrolling people with mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease into a nationwide study last year, he expected to find only a handful of participants with undiagnosed glucose intolerance, as all the patients were already under a doctor’s care and those with known diabetes were excluded. But Turn...

Everyone knows that not all wines are created equal, but this holds especially true when it comes to health benefits.
