11 Best Foods For Your Immune System
The following story is excerpted from TIME’s special edition, 100 Most Healing Foods, which is available in stores, at the Meredith Shop and at Amazon. Vitamin C has a reputation for being a feel-good nutrient, so it will come as no surprise that this list is full of foods with high levels of it. Consuming it also helps the body better absorb iron, which is critical for normal immune-system function. Although foods high in vitamin C won’t stop your flu symptoms, eating them regularly may help prevent...

6,000-year-old track record for healing leaky gut
When I was traveling in India, I had the privilege of studying Ayurvedic medicine with traditional Master Healers. Surrounded by lakes, oceans and mountains, Kerala, India, is the birthplace of Ayurveda medicine. My plane landed in Mumbai. From there, I made the 800-mile trip to Kerala down on the southwestern-most tip of the Indian peninsula. With origins dating back 6,000 years, Kerala is the birthplace of Ayurvedic medicine. I spent a lot of time at the AyurMana or “ancient healing house.” This is the oldest existing school of Ayurvedic medicine in the world. It was there that I observed how quickly Ayurv...

3 nutrients for a sharp, ageless brain
For decades mainstream medicine told us that dying neurons are the problem with an aging brain. But the difference between an old brain and a sharp, young brain isn’t just neurons… You see, mental function depends on two kinds of brain cells. Neurons are just half the story. In fact, when scientists studied Albert Einstein’s brain they found he had a wealth of “other” brain cells that accounted for his genius.  I’m talking about “glia,” or “glial” brain cells. Scientists have known about glial cells for a long time. But they thought they were just support for the n...

High-flavonoid foods, like berries and apples, 'prevent weight gain'
ConclusionThis study found that people who ate more flavonoids, specifically anthocyanins (coming mainly from blueberries and strawberries), flavonoid polymers (from tea and apples), and flavonols (from tea and onions), gained less weight than those consuming less over a 24-year period. Every extra 10mg of anthocyanins, 138mg of flavonoid polymers, and 7mg of flavonols was linked to 70-100g less weight gained over four-year intervals. This isn’t a lot, but adds up over the years.Readers should be aware that cohort studies like this can find associations between consumption of certain food ingredients (like flavonoids) wi...
