Medicare Advantage Saves Lives, Limbs, Sight, And Major Amounts of Money – (Part 1)
BY GEORGE HALVERSON Former Kaiser Permanente CEO George Halvorson has written on THCB on and off over the years, most notably with his proposal for Medicare Advantage for All post-COVID. He wrote a piece in Health Affairs last year arguing with the stance of Medicare Advantage of Don Berwick and Rick Gilfillan (Here’s their piece pt1, pt2). We also published his criticism (Part 1. Part 2. Part 3) of Medpac’s analysis of Medicare Advantage.  Now Medpac is meeting again and George is wondering why they don’t seem to care about diabetic foot amputations. We are publishing part one today with part two com...

The key to living with less pain is understanding what relieves pain, why it works, and how to achieve it
An excerpt from The Pain Solution: 5 Steps to Relieve and Prevent Back Pain, Muscle Pain, and Joint Pain without Medication. In a one-year period, more than 54 percent of Americans report musculoskeletal pain, including arthritis pain, low back pain, and neck pain. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? Outbreaks of Injustice Linked by Two Different Dobbs.
BY MIKE MAGEE Under the definition for the noun, epidemic, there are two main (and distinctly different) definitions. I know this fact because it was the beginning point of my preparations earlier this summer for a Fall course on “The History of Epidemics in America” at the Presidents College at the University of Hartford.  The entry reads: Epidemic nounep·i·dem·ic | \ ˌe-pə-ˈde-mik  \Definition of epidemic (Entry 2 of 2)1: an outbreak of disease that spreads quickly and affects many individuals at the same time : an outbreak of epidemic disease2: an outbreak or product of sudden ra...

In this study, researchers gathered a diverse group of participants; 43 percent were Black, and 68 percent were women. They also considered factors such as age and insurance status when drawing conclusions. The study occurred through a clinical trial, where all participants were randomly assigned to have their next visit occur through either phone or video-based platforms. The central unit of measurement was visit satisfaction rate, reported on a ten-point scale. Researchers noted noninferiority data based on whether patient satisfaction between the telehealth methods exceeded a -15 percent margin.-----https://www.theverge....

“Virgin-Soil Epidemics” Covers a Multitude of Sins
BY MIKE MAGEE Epidemics don’t appear in isolation of geography, social status, race or economics. In a recent Kaiser Family Foundation article, the authors reviewed case numbers and death rates organized by race/ethnicity. It will come as no surprise that the most vulnerable populations death rate is nearly three times greater than the least vulnerable. But what may surprise you is that the population at greatest risk was neither self-identified as Black or Hispanic, but Native American. Sadly, this is not a new story, but in the analogs of American history, it has been papered over by a partially true, but inco...

Mining Ultrasound Data to Improve Liver Diagnostics: Interview with Beth Rogozinski, CEO at Oncoustics
Oncoustics, a medtech company based in Ontario, Canada, developed the OnX Liver Assessment Solution, an AI-powered ultrasound-based diagnostic system for liver disease. At present, detecting liver disease is a challenge, potentially involving high-end imaging systems, specialists, and invasive biopsies. These challenges, and the related expense, can limit patient access to such testing for those with strong indications of liver disease. Consequently, in many cases, liver disease may not be detected until it is already quite advanced, limiting the potential for early detection and treatment. There is a clear need for a n...

I am not sure just how a realistic response is possible in any reasonable time.In OZ the PM has come back after a week off to have the Chinese Ambassador tell us we are a vassal and to just shut up and behave. We must disrupt harm
In the mid-1980s, with the AIDS epidemic on the horizon, austere conservative Margaret Thatcher sanctioned the first needle exchanges in the U.K. to prevent the budgetary burden that HIV might otherwise have become on the National Health Service. Nearly forty years later, New York City opened its first supervised injection sites in November of 2021, Read more… We must disrupt harm originally appeared in KevinMD.com.
