Abridged version of the AWMF guideline for the medical clinical diagnostics of indoor mould exposure
This article is an abridged version of the AWMF mould guideline “Medical clinical diagnostics of indoor mould exposure” presented in April 2016 by the German Society of Hygiene, Environmental Medicine and Preventive Medicine (Gesellschaft f ür Hygiene, Umweltmedizin und Präventivmedizin, GHUP), in collaboration with the above-mentioned scientific medical societies, German and Austrian societies, medical associations and experts. Indoor mould growth is a potential health risk, even if a quantitative and/or causal relationship between the occurrence of individual mould species and health problems has yet to be establis...

Aircraft noise exposure and hypertension
Increasing traffic by all modes of transport has led to a general rise in noise pollution. The European Environment Agency recently compared data on aircraft noise between 2007 and 2012, and observed that in Europe there had been a general increase in people exposed to aircraft noise.1 Over the last decade, a number of epidemiological studies have found traffic noise to be associated with cardiovascular disease, including hypertension, ischaemic heart disease and stroke.2–5 Although the evidence is increasing, well-designed studies within this area are still needed. Most studies on traffic noise and hypertension have...

Urban and Transport Planning Related Exposures and Mortality: A Health Impact Assessment for Cities
Conclusions: PA factors and environmental exposures can be modified by changes in urban and transport planning. We emphasize the need for a) the reduction of motorized traffic through the promotion of active and public transport and b) the provision of green infrastructure, both of which are suggested to provide opportunities for PA and for mitigation of air pollution, noise, and heat. Neonatal Cord Blood Oxylipins and Exposure to Particulate Matter in the Early-Life Environment: An ENVIRONAGE Birth Cohort Study
Conclusion: In utero exposure to particulate matter, particularly during the second trimester, was associated with differences in the cord blood levels of metabolites derived from the lipoxygenase pathways. These differences may indicate an effect of air pollution during in utero life on the inflammatory state of the newborn at birth. Oxylipins may be important mediators between early life exposures and health outcomes later in life. This EHP Advance Publication article has been peer-reviewed, revised, and accepted for publication. EHP Advance Publication articles are completely cit...

[Editorial] Zika's emerging threat for the Asia-Pacific region
“Any time there's disease in Singapore, we say that disease is hard to control”, said Tom Frieden the head of US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, when he expressed concerns about the surge of Zika virus infection cases in a country with a health-care system widely perceived as strong and efficient. The first locally transmitted Zika virus infection case was reported on Aug 27, but as of Sept 5, 258 Zika virus infections were confirmed by Singapore authorities. The Ministry of Health and National Environment Agency in Singapore have intensified mosquito vector control to reduce t he spread of Zika virus, exte...

Managing the drinking water catchment areas: the French agricultural cooperatives feed back.
This article shows how the French agricultural cooperatives transformed the awareness of the raw water quality problem into an opportunity for the development and implementation of more precise and responsible practices, to protect their environment. They measure in order to pilot, co-construct and build the best action plans possible according to the three pillars of environment, economy and agronomy. [The German Environmental Specimen Bank].
Abstract The main objective of the German Environmental Specimen Bank (ESB) is the long-term storage of environmental and human samples under stable deep-freeze conditions for future research. The ESB is unique in providing a continuous historical record of environmental and human exposure to chemicals in Germany. ESB was started parallel to the development of the first German Chemicals Legislation in the late 1970s. In 1979, the ESB test operation began. After the Chemicals Law came into force in 1982, the ESB was established as a permanent facility in 1985. With the new European Chemicals Legislation, RE...

[A Study of 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT) and HBM values for 2-MBT in the urine of adults and children : Opinion of the "Human Biomonitoring" Commission of the German Federal Environment Agency].
Abstract 2-Mercaptobenzothiazole (2-MBT, CAS No. 149-30-4) is mainly used as a vulcanization accelerator in the production of rubber. Other applications are as a fungicide in paints and varnishs and for the external treatment of animals. Because of its manifold application in consumer products, for example in soothers, exposure of the general population to 2-MBT can't be excluded. For the purpose of a toxicological evaluation of a possible body burden, the German HBM-commission derived HBM-I values for 2-MBT in the urine of children and adults. The no observed adverse effect level of 94 mg/kg bw/d from a ...
