Evidence for an association of prenatal exposure to particulate matter with clinical severity of Autism Spectrum Disorder
In this study, we used air quality monitoring data to examine whether mothers of children with ASD were exposed to high levels of air pollutants during critical periods of pregnancy, and if higher exposure levels may lead to a higher clinical severity in their offspring. We used public data from the Portuguese Environment Agency to estimate exposure to these pollutants during the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy, full pregnancy and first year of life of the child, for 217 subjects with ASD born between 2003 and 2016. These subjects were stratified in two subgroups according to clinical severity, as defined b...

HBM4EU from the Coordinator's perspective: lessons learnt from managing a large-scale EU project
We present four major points: First, prior to the beginning of the project, the Consortium Agreement needs to be well elaborated to prevent conflicts during the project lifetime. Second, a strong role for national and EU policy-making authorities in the administrative governance structure enhances the interest of recipients of project results. Third, large-scale international collaborative projects need an elaborate and well-financed scientific governance structure. Fourth, a differentiation of funding rates among project activities threatens to create conflicts. HBM4EU provides a prototype for EU funded large-scale projec...

Cadmium dietary exposure assessment in the adult population and pre-school children in the Republic of Serbia
Food Addit Contam Part A Chem Anal Control Expo Risk Assess. 2022 Nov 7:1-14. doi: 10.1080/19440049.2022.2141467. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal, present in all matrices of the environment and a common food contaminant. Human exposure to it may elicit many diverse health impairments. The aim of this study was to assess the dietary exposure to Cd for the adult population and preschool children in Serbia using probabilistic methodology. We measured Cd in 11,227 food samples belonging to 50 food items on the Serbian market. Cd was detected in 90% of the tested food items, and in 30.8% of the overa...

Blood lead levels in 2018/2019 compared to 1987/1988 in the German population-based KORA study
DISCUSSION: KORA-Fit provided contemporary normative data for BLL in a Western European population without major current sources of lead exposure. Mean BLLs have fallen since the 1980s using historical BLL data which is likely linked to the ban of leaded gasoline. Nevertheless, BLLs in this population remain elevated at levels associated with morbidity and mortality.PMID:36041540 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2022.114184 (Source: Environmental Research)

Human Biomonitoring for Europe (HBM4EU)-first insights into the results of the initiative
Bundesgesundheitsblatt Gesundheitsforschung Gesundheitsschutz. 2022 Aug 23. doi: 10.1007/s00103-022-03578-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHuman biomonitoring measures the internal exposure of humans to chemicals from various sources, such as food, everyday objects, or the air we breathe, by analyzing blood and urine, for example. To promote and coordinate human biomonitoring in Europe, the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) was launched in 2017 and involves 30 countries, the European Environment Agency, and the European Commission. The project was completed in June 2022.Comparable and reliable exposure data ...
