How much did you study for your boards?
Just trying to get a sense of what others have done to pass, without overdoing it and studying "too much". For reference, I finished residency last week, have been studying a few hours/day (~4) for the last week or two. Am I ready? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

From a rad onc resident: Derm specialty's experience with over-training?
Rad onc resident here. In the rad onc world, academic leaders have expanded the # of residency slots to the point that the number of graduating rad onc residents each year doubled over a decade for no good reason other than probably to provide their faculty with resident coverage so they can write papers. Our SDN board has done a great job of raising the alarm that at this rate the job market is going to fall out from under us and rad onc residents will be faced with having to do... Rural Derm Salary?
Just curious about what salaries/practice outlooks look like in more rural areas. I know you can get a premium in some fields, but wasn't sure how well that translated to derm. I grew up in a rural area and it's honestly something I wouldn't mind (or would even prefer). I could definitely imagine practicing somewhere like NH/Vermont/Maine or upper midwest. What do you think?
I'm trying to get in an MD program this application cycle. URM. cGPA- 3.39 sGPA- 3.2, retaking MCAT in August. Over 1000 hours in a clinic with direct patient care as a BH coordinator, 500+ hours shadowing a Dermatology FNP. Volunteer/Leadership 500+ hours, LOR from organic chem teacher, genetics teacher, and the FNP. LOR very strong (includes family death, father's loss of job, previous self-harm). If I score well enough on the MCAT do I have a shot? My top choice is Meharry Medical... What do you think? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Is it a mistake to take a research year between M3 and M4?
Rising M4 at a mid-tier school in the south. 250 step 1, 4/6 clinical honors including surgery and medicine, unsure if AOA. 4 publications with a few others in the works and few poster presentations. While my resume looks OK for derm, I feel like I don't really have any mentors or advocates. I also don't have any aways scheduled for the year. I was originally planning on taking a research year (between M3 and M4) but feeling unsure if it will just be a waste of time. I was hoping to get... Cosmetics Billing Question
I’m looking for permanent positions, and one was offering 7.5% of gross cosmetic billing. For reference, Botox in the area is typically going for $12-13/unit, at cost of $6/unit. This seems pretty low, with 50 units only netting $45. Doesn’t seem worth the time at that price. What’s standard way of calculating injectable reimbursement to the performing doc? I figured most practices offered a % after cost of product was taken out. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Perception of Derm
Was having a conversation with my friend about this the other day, so I was curious what other people thought. Even though derm is one of the most competitive fields to get into, my impression was that it is one of the least "respected" fields in medicine for the general public. Do you think that most of the public even knows that dermatologists are doctors? I wouldn't be suprised if some people thought of them the same way they think of a dentist. What are your thoughts? How do you... Perception of Derm (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Better life in residency on Instagram
Hi guys, I am a MS1 nearing the end of 1st year and I can't help but notice that dermatology residents seem to have a better life in residency than medical school on Instagram. I follow a number of derm residents and attending and from what I can tell, they look happier, healthier, more attractive and doing more fun things in residency than medical school. This seems to be the case with just about every derm resident I have followed. In medical school, they don't post that many photos and... Pain S/P excision skin CA/RadioTx
92 y.o. male, who appears much younger than his stated age, S/P resection skin CA 3 years ago followed by radiotherapy and then a a skin graft. He has constant pain at site and distally. I just saw him after he has failed multiple meds including opiates. The patient isn't interested in more pills. I tried covering the wound with 1% lidocaine but that did not change his pain at all. It looks like a combination of radiation dermatitis plus pain from the wound. When he flexes his foot tendon... Pain S/P excision skin CA/RadioTx (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Not having the "personality" for derm?
I recently shadowed an academic pediatric dermatologist and surprisingly loved the experience. It felt like everything really clicked. However, I do have one big concern about applying to derm (beyond needing to kill Step1, publish a lot, etc.). I've heard repeatedly that residencies care a lot about "fit". The issue is that among all the residents and med students interested in derm that I've met at my school, they predominantly seem to fall into one type: usually female, white or Asian... Highschooler looking to go straight to a international med school.
I am from the US with citizenship. I am looking for more options other than going to med school in the US. My current goal is to be a dermatologist. I have looked at the Caribbean and the Atlantic bridge program. I am a very fast learner and have earned many scholarships. I am in the top 10% of my highschool class. I feel like I have determination to become a US IMG. Most of you would advise against this but please try to throw some ideas at me. For me, US med schools are still an option. I... Production/billing question
Hi, I am currently reviewing an offer and I have a question about how it states the collections will be "adjusted." -All J and Q codes will be deducted from the collections calculation. -Cost of cosmetic injectables will be deducted. -Collections from laser procedures will have 10 percent deducted to cover maintenance. -Cost for patch testing strips will be deducted -koh cpt code will be deducted. Although I understand the part about cosmetic injectables being deducted, is the rest of... Production/billing question (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Undergraduate Schools
Hi I am a 19 year old currently going to a community college getting my A.S. in Biological Science and am planning on transferring to a 4y college to get my B.S. I plan to go to Med school and study to be a dermatologist. What are the best undergraduate schools near the DMV (DC, MD, VA) that would accept me with a GPA of about 3.78 at the moment? I researched a lot but not many people are helpful in testifying why they liked a specific school or which school had the best professors. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
