NIDCR Grand Rounds: Women in Science – Stem Cells in Jaw Growth and Disease
NIDCR Grand Rounds The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint and the only bilateral joints that must function together as one unit to support mastication and speech. TMJ trauma and diseases, such as osteoarthritis, can be debilitating and severely reduce quality of life. Current TMJ treatments generally involve either pain management or invasive surgeries, such as total joint replacement surgery. There are no minimally invasive, regenerative TMJ therapies. Dr. Embree and her lab have identified TMJ-specific fibrocartilage stem cells that self-organize and regenerate cartilage, fat, and vascularized bone. She has...

Novel Light-Based Technologies for the Detection, Diagnosis, and Selective Removal of Dental Decay
NIDCR Grand Rounds High-precision light-based technologies are leading the way to a new era of minimally invasive dentistry. Optical methods developed by Dr. Daniel Fried ’ s group can instantly image dental caries, an approach shown to have higher performance than X-rays for diagnosis of tooth decay. Novel diagnostic and therapeutic devices built by Dr. Fried ’ s team take advantage of the optical properties of hard tissues exposed to long wavelengths of light in the near-infrared and infrared. Dental enamel becomes highly transparent near an infrared wavelength of 1300 nm, which is ideally suited for capturing images...

Procedural Pause:
James R. Roberts, MD, & Martha Roberts, CEN, ACNP, note that EPs aren’t dentists, but they can help patients with dental fractures until they can see a dentist. The best part about this particular procedure is that anyone can do it, and it only takes a few minutes.
