9 Steps to Treat Depression Naturally
Ever since I started an online community for treatment-resistant depression — depression and anxiety that don’t respond to psychotropic medications — I’ve been inundated with mail from desperate people who have tried 30 to 40 different kinds of antidepressants, and feel no relief. I repeatedly hear from family members of folks who have tried everything, and are not getting better. I sense the utter frustration and despair in their words, and it pains me. I, too, felt hopeless after trying countless medication combinations and sitting through years of psychotherapy sessions, only to continue my death ob...

Monkey Pie
Ever have a slice of monkey pie? No? Well, that’s good, because there is no such thing, at least not in our part of the world. And it would be weird if there was. It would be contrary to instinctive notions, eating a creature similar to humans. You wouldn’t eat human pie and, for similar reasons, you wouldn’t eat monkey pie. Would you agree that every creature on earth, human and otherwise, follows an instinctive dietary program?     This toad is an insectivore, consuming flies and grasshoppers in order to survive. Nobody had to tell this toad that flies are delicious. Properly nourished...

Study on Potential Toxicity of E-Cigarette Flavorings Produces Unwarranted Scare
A study published in the journal Tobacco Control this past April has produced an unwarranted scare about the potential toxicity of the flavorings in electronic cigarettes.(See: Tierney PA, et al. Flavour chemicals in electronic cigarette fluids. Tobacco Control. Published online ahead of print on April 15, 2015. DOI: 0.1136/tobaccocontrol-2014-052175.)The study used gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to analyze the chemical constituents in e-liquids of various flavors. It appears that 30 different e-liquid flavors were tested. Multiple flavors of two brands of disposable e-cigarettes (Blu and NJOY) were tested along with...

Late Night Dinner at Five & Ten in Athens, Georgia
At first, I was really, really upset that my flight to Atlanta was delayed, making us miss our 8:30 dinner reservation at Five & Ten in Athens, Georgia. This was no ordinary dinner reservation. My brother Joe and wife Rachel had arranged a special tasting meal for us with Five & Ten’s executive chef, Jason Zygmont, who they originally met when Joe stopped into the kitchen one day last year unannounced to borrow preserving salt for some charcuterie he was making. Joe returned a few weeks later to give Jason some of the duck proscuitto he had cured, expecting to quickly drop it off with the busy chef...

How to Lower Your Risk for Breast Cancer
“TREE OF HOPE” Breast Cancer Survivor Tree I found out I had breast cancer on June 11th 2014. I had a double mastectomy on July 3rd 2014. I am 4 months out from surgery and I am feeling great. However, as you might imagine, it was no walk in the park. Lots of emotional upheaval. Lots of physical difficulty. But with great support from friends, family and good health care workers I’m doing very well. Over the last 4 months I have spent most of my free time learning about cancer and in particular breast cancer, what causes it and what cures it.  Before my diagnosis, it never crossed my mind that I would get b...

Liking Healthy Foods is a Choice
By Leo Babauta I have a theory that I’ve been testing: whether you have a taste for a particular food is a choice. I’m sure there are things you turn your nose up at: vegetables (lots of people), or kale (my kids), eggplant (Eva), tofu (many non-vegetarians), quinoa (crazy people), something. But what I’ve learned is that tastes can change. In fact, we can change them on purpose: I used to hate vegetables. Now I love them. I used to hate soymilk when I first tried it. Now I drink it daily. I didn’t like brown rice, about 10 years ago. Now I much prefer it to white rice (which has no substance)....

The Art of Tasting Chocolate Mindfully
Editor’s note: This is a guest post from Todd Masonis of Dandelion Chocolate, one of Leo’s favorite chocolate shops in the world. Leo: I attended a Chocolate 101 class with Eva at Dandelion Chocolate’s beautiful little chocolate factory/shop on Valencia Street in San Francisco about a month ago, and absolutely loved it. I asked Todd, co-founder of Dandelion, to share some tips on tasting chocolate … mindfully. Without further ado, here’s Todd Masonis of Dandelion Chocolate, on the Art of Tasting Chocolate Mindfully: We’re often asked if there’s a right way or a wrong way to tast...

Here comes the sun
How easily we forget the past. Five months into this season of depression, I'm finally experiencing some freedom from the oppression - by practicing skills I've known for 2 years now. I brush the dust off slowly as my therapist reminds me how to bring the sunshine back. Opposite action - throwing myself into the life God has set before me, children, messes and all. Accumulating positives - a scribbled list of gratitude in my Joy Journal. Mindfulness - ignoring my constant, self-refreshing mental to-do list and entering into the present moment completely.Returning to these practices slants the sunlight back into our home. T...
