How do you properly update a medical school application?
Hey all, I am trying to figure out the "procedure" of how to go about notifying a school of a change in your medical school application. I recently was placed on a pre-interview hold for DMU and wanted to notify them that I just returned from a medical mission (*cough* consider me please *cough*). What is the best way to go about doing that? If it's just an email, does it need to be formatted any single way? What should I include in the email? If it's calling, what do I say? And to whom?... Upcoming interview, bad cough
Got sick a few weeks ago and got a moderately bad cough. It has lingered. I have an interview in a few days and I doubt the cough will go away. Will it negatively affect the interview evaluation if I'm coughing during the interview? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Scribin' Ain't Easy
Over the summer I accepted an RA position that paid a little over $11.00 an hour and I loved every minute of it. Sadly, there were no positions available during the Fall. So I decided to apply as a scribe to get some clinical experience (I already have 2,000+ hours as a PT aide, but I figured I would try my hand at scribing). I won't name the exact company *cough, cough, Phys Assist,* but they offered me a minimum wage position, until I complete 375 hours. Then the pay will increase to $9.75... Those oh so smooth wakeups... what's your secret?
How do you get the smooth wakeups? What are you doing with regards to vent settings, gas, opiods, adjuncts, etc? When are you doing it? What's your thought process? Please, give me the secrets. I'm talking everything from the ENT "Oh, don't blow my flap!" cases to the lap chole "Oh, this anesthesiologist is just not that good because their patients always cough or buck when they wake up!" cases. Data: A Case Study in Bias for Prestigious Undergrads, Yale SOM
One immortal "feature" of SDN is handwringing about how much undergraduate prestige matters and in what situations. It is very hard to gain an objective foothold on this question and most of us have a sense that "yah, it matters -- but not that much, it won't save an otherwise poor application, and probably only matters at schools that value that certain je ne sais qois in their applicants (*cough* Harvard *cough*)." One of the reasons this is a difficult question to answer is... Data: A Case Study in Bias for Prestigious Undergrads, Yale SOM (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Does it still make sense to specialize?
Hello all, I wanted to ask does it still make sense for new grads to specialize (Not including OMFS). I have a long road ahead in terms of getting through dental school. I originally planned to pursue Orthodontics(Or possibly Endodontics) after dental school. However, I am now reading negative takes on the job outlook for Orthodontics (Due to super GP's, saturation, etc.). Does it still make sense to specialize after dental school (And have to cough up more tuition) given the current and... Does it still make sense to specialize? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Family members treating/loaning medications to patients?
I've recently had a spate of family members loaning antibiotics/insulin/medications to other family members -- most recently today -- had a female patient present for a cough and find out the husband had some Cipro lying around and treated her for 6 days with Cipro. When I inquired about it, I was told "don't try it" -- almost in the sense of questioning his "medical judgement". To my knowledge, they were not a physician --- so -- how do the rest of you handle family members doctoring... Family members treating/loaning medications to patients? Cough medication
So I stumbled on Guaifenesin DM 100/10 labels that said the direction for kids under 12: (10 ml every 4 hours prn). Normally, it's supposed to be 5ml q4h prn. Would you change the direction and contact doctor? And is there a weight-based dose cough syrup (guaifenesin DM) for children? Many thanks. (Source: Student Doctor Network)
