How Automated Lineage Improves Healthcare Data
The following is a guest article by Ernie Ostic, Chief Evangelist at Manta The healthcare industry creates a vast amount of data each year — roughly 30% of worldwide data — the bulk of which must conform with regulatory standards. That data lives in a complex and evolving ecosystem, integrated with multiple applications and infrastructures, creating countless dependencies. Between the volume of data and the web of interconnected systems, those dependencies remain hidden from most users in a “black box” of sorts. Without insight into the inner workings of their own flow of information, most healthcare organizations...

Why Am I So Tired?
Circadian rhythms control the timing of many daily changes in your body. Credit: iStock. If you struggle to wake up in time for school or work or feel drowsy during a trip abroad, your circadian rhythms may be out of sync with your environment. Circadian rhythms are your internal timekeepers, and almost all organisms, from bacteria to plants and animals, have them. You can’t see them, but you can feel their effects—they control when you get sleepy, when you wake up in the morning, and when you feel hungry. Among other signals, the brain uses sunlight to keep time. Changing Circadian Rhythms Exposure to ligh...

Finally home!
Well, we (and our 8 cats!) actually moved back home a few weeks ago, but I have been so busy that my head has been spinning. Plus, big news: I have a cataract in my left eye, so I can’t stay at the computer for very long. Luckily, my normal routine hasn’t been affected, and I can still drive, but I will have to get the cataract removed in the autumn, for sure. No biggie (says the gal who had hip replacement surgery, hehe…btw, my new hip’s doing great!). It will get done…but first, we’re going on vacation! In about ten days or so…can’t wait. Funny how time just flies by, as I ...

Truthfully, the Physician Shortage Doesn ’ t Exist!
Conclusion: For every hour physicians provide direct clinical face time to patients, nearly 2 additional hours is spent on EHR and desk work within the clinic day. Outside office hours, physicians spend another 1 to 2 hours of personal time each night doing additional computer and other clerical work. (Sinsky et al, 2016) If we only had the tools and the administrative support that just about every one of us has been asking for, there wouldn’t be a doctor shortage. The quote here is from 7 years ago and things have gotten even worse since then. Major league baseball players don’t handle the scoring and the st...

My Most Intense Psychedelic Journey So Far
I blocked off Friday evening for another magic mushroom journey. For the two experiences last month, I used about 1.5g of dried mushrooms each time. This time I opted to take 4.2g, eating the dried mushrooms plain, starting at 5pm. I trust my intuition regarding how much to take, figuring this much could invite a fairly intense experience. It was actually super intense, way beyond what I experienced with ayahuasca and my two prior mushroom trips. It really started kicking in after about 40 minutes. I put on an eye mask and laid back on the couch while listening to music. It flowed nicely at first with lots of red-orange...

I was reading ECGs on the system when I came across this one, called " normal " by the conventional computer algorithm
I come in early for every shift to read the ECGs on the system that have not yet been " confirmed " .  I came across this one:The computer calls is: " SINUS RHYTHM. NORMAL ECG "What do you think? Be VERY careful when the computer calls the ECG " Normal " .  I saw the inferior ST depression (which is reciprocal to subtle STE in aVL) and the subtle ST depression in precordial leads and thought:" If this patient came in with chest pain, then it is an acute OMI. "So I looked on the computer.  Turns out that it was a 50-something patient with no previous cardiac history who had called 911 for chest pain...

How Automation Tech is Fixing Healthcare ’s Broken Hiring Pipeline
The following is a guest article by Dr. Kit Latham, Co-Founder and CEO at Credentially Workforce burnout is a major problem across the US healthcare system, with approximately one in three physicians experiencing burnout at any given time, according to research. As a doctor, I’ve seen first-hand how the pressure that it places on clinicians and administrative teams can have serious knock-on impacts on organizational outcomes and patient safety. Much has already been written about how clinician workload and patient demand can be safely reduced. But I believe that, because burnout is fundamentally a capacity problem, the f...
