Quiz: Do You Know Pharmacology Facts?
This is the final post in our miniseries on pharmacology. Check out the others: “What Is Pharmacology?“, “What Happens to Medicine In Your Body?“, and “How Do Medicines Work?“ Credit: NIGMS. Pharmacologists research how the body acts on medicines (e.g., absorption, excretion) and how medicines act in the body, as well as how these effects vary from person to person. NIGMS-funded pharmacology researchers are: Conducting research to design medicines with fewer side effects Exploring how genes cause people to respond differently to medicines Developing new methods and molecul...

AI and special needs adults: The AI Guardian is in sight
Over the past decade I ' ve written on social media about the concept of an AI Guardian, but I realize I ' ve never put it into a blog post [4]. With the release of the LLM AIs [1] including ChatGP4,ChatGPT plugins,  and recentlyGPT Agents (GPTs) the AI Guardian is much closer than I ' d expected. So it ' s time to write something.First, of course, I decided to ask ChatGPT. I ' ve never seen the concept of an AI Guardian online, but evidently I ' ve been looking in the wrong places. Glasses Provide Audible Prompts for Blind Wearers
A team at the University of Technology Sydney has developed an assistive technology for blind people and those with low vision. The system consists of glasses that can view their surroundings through an on-board camera, appraise the objects nearby using computer vision technology, and then play a sound that provides a cue for the wearer as to their surroundings. These “sound icons” could include a rustling sound when leaves are viewed, or a small bark when a dog appears, as examples. The technology could offer additional information on their environment for low vision wearers, and assist with daily tasks. Technology...

American Telemedicine Association Leaps Into Privacy and AI Policies
The computerization of daily life has evolved from a set of technical decisions to a matter of urgent public policy over the past few decades. The American Telemedicine Association (ATA) recently released two sets of principles that highlights its concerns in two prominent computing issues: privacy and AI. Of course, privacy and AI both make front-page news these days. Concerns over the data protection of individuals dates back to the 1970s. The issue takes on new urgency since evidence has emerged about the manipulation of voters and exploitation of children. AI became the subject of an international summit at Bletchley P...

Will the AMA Support A Move Toward Single Payer Health Care?
By MIKE MAGEE The Politico headline in 2019 declared dramatically, “The Most Powerful Activist in America is Dying.” This week, 4 1/2 years later, their prophecy came true, as activist Ady Barkan succumbed at age 39 to ALS leaving behind his vibrant wife, English professor, Rachael King, and two small children, Carl,7, and Willow,3. His journey, as one of the nation’s leading activists for a single-payer health care system began, not coincidentally, began with his diagnosis of A.L.S. in 2016, 4 months after the birth of his first child. His speech at the Democratic National Convention fully exposed his conditio...

New Lenovo Server Permits AI to Run Locally
Lenovo has been famous for their laptops for a long time, but they also have a strong business in computer servers. They offer hardware for data centers as well as edge locations, along with a SaaS style pricing model called TruScale. According to Robert Daigle, Director of Global AI at Lenovo, a new system called the Lenovo ThinkEdge SE455 V3 makes it possible to run compute-heavy tasks such as generative AI in a workplace at “the edge.” The SE455 is only half as loud as comparable servers, and can survive at a temperature of 55°C, and therefore can co-exist with people in a typical office or research center....

Microfluidic System Incorporates Eight Organ Tissues for Drug Testing
Researchers at Northwestern University have developed a sophisticated microfluidic system that incorporates tissue from up to eight different organ systems. The technology is unprecedented in allowing researchers to study complex interactions between different organs during disease. Moreover, it also allows for more comprehensive drug testing that investigates the effects of drug candidates on multiple organ systems at once. Called Lattice, the system is a significant advancement over pre-existing in vitro systems, which typically only allow researchers to study two organ tissues at once. The entire system fits into a spac...

If you are of a certain age, you’ll remember Y2K, the fear that the year 2000 would cause computers ev...
