Construction of carboxymethyl chitosan/PVA/chitin nanowhiskers multicomponent film activated with Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolics and in situ SeNP for enhanced packaging application
Int J Biol Macromol. 2023 Nov 14:128073. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2023.128073. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis work focused on the construction of bioactive packaging films based on carboxymethyl chitosan and poly(vinyl alcohol) (CMP) as polymeric matrix and fortified with chitin nanowhiskers, Cotylelobium lanceolatum phenolic extract (CL) and in situ synthesized nano selenium. Extensive morphological, microstructural, physical and mechanical analysis revealed that the nanofillers were well-dispersed and integrated into CMP matrix. Incorporation of the extract and nano selenium produced excellent UV blocking properties w...

Synergistic Antimicrobial Activity of Eugenol in Combination with Fosfomycin to Combat Escherichia coli and Potential Effect on Plasmid-Mediated Fosfomycin Resistance Genes
The objective of this study was to investigate the potential synergistic effect of the combination of Eugenol and Fosfomycin against clinically Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) and their possible co-treatment as well as their contribution to plasmid-mediated Fosfomycin resistance (fosA3 and fosA4) genes using molecular assays. Eugenol was extracted from clove (Syzygium aromaticum) plants using steam distillation by Clevenger and analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). UPEC accounted for 63.6% of all isolates. Specifically, 99.3% of the UPEC isolates exhibited resistance to multiple types of antibiot...

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) of essential oils for the control of Fusarium oxysporum in cherry tomato seeds
Braz J Biol. 2023 Oct 30;83:e274368. doi: 10.1590/1519-6984.274368. eCollection 2023.ABSTRACTFusarium oxysporum is the causal agent of Fusarium wilt in tomato plants. The most common form of control of this disease is through seed chemical treatment. However, the present work presents an alternative method, through the fumigation technique with essential oils. The pathogen F. oxysporum was inoculated on organic cherry tomato seeds through contact with sporulated Petri® plates. Thereafter, seeds were placed in stainless steel crucibles containing a 1.0 x 1.0 cm filter paper adhered to the lid and kept for 24 hours. This pa...

In Vitro Antioxidant and Inhibitory Study of < em > Picrorhiza kurroa < /em > (Kutki), < em > Syzygium aromaticum < /em > (Loung), < em > Lawsonia inermis < /em > (Henna), < em > Rheum emodi < /em > (Revand Chini), < em > Curcuma longa < /em > (Haldi) Against Lipid Per-Oxidation in Mice Brain and Liver
This study was done to evaluate the antioxidant and protective properties of P kurroa, S aromaticum, L inermis, R emodi, and C longa against lipid peroxidation induced by different pro-oxidants. The aqueous extracts of these medicinal plants showed inhibition against thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS) induced by different pro-oxidants (10 mM FeSO4 and 5 mM sodium nitroprusside) in the brain and liver of mice. Moreover, the free radical scavenging activities of the extracts were evaluated by the scavenging of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. L inermis, S aromaticum, and R emodi showed higher inhib...
