Outcomes from a proof-of-concept specialist lymphoedema clinic in the community
Br J Community Nurs. 2024 Apr 1;29(Sup4):S14-S18. doi: 10.12968/bjcn.2024.29.Sup4.S14.ABSTRACTThe Health and Safety Execultive lymphoedema model of care was published in 2018 highlighting the lack of dedicated lymphoedema services in Ireland. This led to the introduction of a proof-of-concept primary care specialist lymphoedema clinic. The clinic was responsible for all patients from their county. A comprehensive dataset was gathered which included the patient's history for 1 year prior to their presentation at clinic and then 6 monthly. A quality of life tool (LymQoL) and a patient satisfaction survey were completed. Comp...

Development of a hospital coding intensity measure based on sepsis diagnoses
AbstractSignificant variation in coding intensity among hospitals has been observed and can lead to reimbursement inequities and inadequate risk adjustment for quality measures. Reliable tools to quantify hospital coding intensity are needed. We hypothesized that coded sepsis rates among patients hospitalized with common infections may serve as a useful surrogate for coding intensity and derived a hospital-level sepsis coding intensity measure using prevalence of “sepsis” primary diagnoses among patients hospitalized with urinary tract infection, cellulitis, and pneumonia. This novel measure was well correlated with th...

Influence of Environmental Temperature on the Occurrence of Driveline Infection in LVAD Patients
Purpose: Driveline infections (DLIs) are the most common type of LVAD-related infections and are associated with poor prognosis. Humidity resulting from perspiration can exacerbate the development of soft tissue and skin infections by promoting bacterial growth. Seasonal trends in cellulitis with peak in the warmer months have been previously reported in the general population. However, seasonality of DLIs has not been studied. Here, we investigated seasonal and microbiological patterns of DLIs, and their association with environmental temperature. (Source: The Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation)

Effects of exercise on lower limb lymphedema in gynecologic cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Although the meta-analysis does not reveal a significant effect, the systematic review study demonstrated that exercise is feasible, safe, and has a clinical effect on alleviating lymphedema-related symptoms of women following gynecological cancer surgery.PMID:38554614 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102550 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Use of compression therapy for cellulitis
CONCLUSIONS: Cellulitis frequently affects older patients, especially smokers, people with overweight and chronic lymphoedema. In all, 66% were treated with compression therapy that did not have a clear effect on their readmission rate, probably because the patients receiving compression therapy had a more severe infection complicated by severe oedema and a higher risk of reinfection. An increased focus on the use of compression therapy in conjunction with health preventive interventions may have a positive impact on the relapse rate.FUNDING: None.TRIAL REGISTRATION: Not relevant.PMID:38533881 | DOI:10.61409/A08230530 (Sou...
