Are You Ready to Commit?
In the past, women were the gender most likely to ask me how to get their male partners to commit to a long-term relationship. My male patients more often asked for advice as to how they could better "score" with a desired woman and rarely asked me how or when they should commit to a long-term involvement. Their early dating experiences took an easy second place to their career development. Until maturity, career status, and peer pressure coalesced, they were often reluctant to give up the freedom that single status provided. A perfect example was glorified in the musical production, "My Fair Lady,' where Eliza's drunken f...

Announcing changes to our research funding
Last year we redefined our purpose and agreed a new strategic focus to 2020, to make a positive and tangible change in the quality of life for people with arthritis, so they can say “I am in control, independent and recognised”. Our ambition is to transform the lives of people living with arthritis, whilst continuing to fund ground breaking research aimed at preventing the onset of arthritis and developing a cure for arthritis. To achieve this, we’re transforming the scope of our research investment and adopting a new approach to funding, with changes to how we deliver support for musculoskeletal resear...

Men Are Assumed To Be Good Managers, But Women Have To Prove It
Academic studies can be fascinating... and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you.  The Background While some women have been able to break through the glass ceiling, far too often women are stereotyped as the more "emotional" sex and therefore less suited for leadership than men. This antiquated B.S. was summarized by researcher Virginia E. Schein, who in 1973 found that when people "think manager" they "think male." This means that, by virtue of their gender, women are perceived as less competent than their male coworkers, which can lead them...

New career framework for TAs – but professional standards still delayed by DfE
A new career development framework for teaching assistants is available from UNISON and NET – the National Education Trust, but the union has expressed its dismay at the government’s continued delay in publishing matching professional standards. Those standards had been due out in February after a review that was launched in October 2014. But the Department for Education delayed them stating that “it was a bit close to the election”. Four months after that, there is still no sign of them, and UNISON head of education Jon Richards told Schools Week this month: “I have contacted the DfE on a number of...

The changing role of the CIO
Over my 8 years of blogging (since 10/21/07) I've written many posts about IT leadership, career development and re-inventing yourself (something to do every 5-10) years. As a CIO for nearly 20 years, I've seen the nature of the role undergo remarkable evolution. In the early days of my CIO career, it was really important to be a technologist. Networks were unstable, servers were unreliable, desktops were difficult to manage, most vendors did not have enterprise-grade products, and it was often challenging to make infrastructure buying decisions. Workforce ...

UCLA study: Combination therapy may be more effective against the most common ovarian cancer
This study provides evidence that CA125-negative high-grade serous ovarian cancer cells have stem properties and are inherently platinum resistant. The de novo platinum resistance of this tumor subpopulation can explain why these cancers consistently reappear after first-line platinum-based chemotherapy,” the study states. “On the basis of the promising preclinical results here, improving outcomes for this deadly malignancy could be achieved simply by supplementing existing therapies that work well against the majority of tumor cells with agents that sensitize the CA125-negative cells to carboplatin.” The study was p...
