Treating precancers reduces breast cancer deaths
Breast cancer deaths rose through the '70s and '80s, but declined in the '90s. For nearly the past 20 years, American women have had about a 2% annual drop in the breast cancer death rate. Here is the mortality graph provided by the National Cancer Institutes SEER (Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results) program.Though nobody wants to take the blame for the rise in breast cancer deaths in the '70s and '80s, lots of people want credit for the fall of breast cancer deaths that began in the '90s. Was it due to a reduction to the exposure of carcinogens, or to better treatment, or to earlier diagnosis? The fall in breast...

Rare Cancer are Subsets of Common Cancers
In June, 2014, my book, entitled Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs: Keys to Understanding and Treating the Common Diseases was published by Elsevier. The book builds the argument that our best chance of curing the common diseases will come from studying and curing the rare diseases. One of the key ideas developed in the book is that each common diseases is actually an aggregate of cellular processes that are present, individually, in rare diseases. In the case of the common cancers, we can find specific rare diseases that are subsets of the common diseases. Here is an excerpt from Chapter 8: 8.3.3 Inherited syndromes that...

Direct Assault on Advanced Stage Common Cancers Has Not Yielded Cures
In June, 2014, my book, entitled Rare Diseases and Orphan Drugs: Keys to Understanding and Treating the Common Diseases was published by Elsevier. The book builds the argument that our best chance of curing the common diseases will come from studying and curing the rare diseases. Here is a short excerpt from Chapter 8: Though there are thousands of types of human cancer, the bulk of cancer cases in humans are accounted for by just a few, under a dozen, types of cancer. The two most commonly occurring cancers of humans are basal cell carcinoma of skin and squamous cell carcinoma of skin. Together, these two tumors account...

New Study Raises More Questions About the Value of Mammograms
This chart, published in British Medical Journal, shows that the breast cancer mortality of patients who underwent mammogram screening vs. those who did not is practically equal.A new, long-term study in BMJ provides perhaps the most compelling argument to date that screening mammograms may not be effective in reducing the death rate from cancer and may in fact cause harm from overtreatment in some women. The study is based on results from the Canadian National Breast Screening Study. For this research, 89,835 women ages 40 to 59 were randomly assigned to receive either annual mammograms for five years, or no mammograms ...

New nanopharmaceutical may help overcome resistance to specific anticancer drugs
Conclusions: Results generated through this translational research plan suggest that CRLX101 can overcome HIF-1α-mediated acquired resistance to antiangiogenic drugs, assisting the use of CRLX101 in combination with antiangiogenic medicines as an exciting new paradigm for the treatment of cancer. Esteya System for Skin Cancer Treatment Gets FDA 510(k) Clearance (VIDEO)
Nucletron, an Elekta company based in Atlanta, GA, has received FDA clearance for the Esteya electronic brachytherapy system for treating patients with skin cancer. According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and each year there are more new cases of skin cancer than the combined incidence of cancers of the breast, prostate, lung and colon. Though surgery is the main treatment strategy for skin cancer, High Dose Rate (HDR) brachytherapy for nonmelanomatous skin cancer, such as basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma, provides an alternative treatment option. Electronic...

Shannon’s Story: Confronting Ovarian Cancer
My name is Shannon.  I am from Charlotte, NC.  I am married.    In July of 2009, I had just returned from my dream vacation to France.  Not even a month later, following a few trips to the gynecologist with complaints of abdominal pain, I was sitting in the office of a gynecologic oncologist.  I had never even heard those words used in a sentence.  I was being prepped for surgery to remove a cyst.  One week later, I was diagnosed with Stage IIa clear cell carcinoma, a form of ovarian cancer considered rare in younger women.  Within two weeks of being diagnosed, I had  a radical hysterectomy and a few weeks ...

Warnings on Packs Deter Kids From Smoking. The addition of graphic warnings on cigarette packs were more likely to discourage teens from smoking than when warnings were text-only, but did little to dissuade teens who were already regular smokers. Lets redefine cancer
The question has arisen as to how to redefine cancer. A scientific panel states we are using a 19th century definition in the 21st century. The issue is should some precancerous conditions be redefined with out the use of the words cancer or carcinoma."In one example, they say that some premalignant conditions, such as one that affects the breast called ductal carcinoma in situ — which many doctors agree is not cancer — should be renamed to exclude the word carcinoma. That way, patients are less frightened and less likely to seek what may be unneeded and potentially harmful treatments that can include the sur...

Paget's disease if Nipple- Review
Clinical: Approximately 1%–3% of women with adenocarcinoma of the breast have Paget disease. Clinically-Paget disease has common dermatitis-like appearance, as originally described in 1874, when Sir James Paget recorded that such lesions may resemble “ordinary chronic eczema” or present as nipple erosion or ulceration. Paget disease often has a deceptively banal clinical morphology but should lead the list of differential diagnoses when evaluating unilateral lesions of the nipple–areola complex in adults. Paget disease presenting with nipple erosion.  Most women with the histopathologic finding o...
